Will I have trouble in front with 30x9.5x15 on '95 G20 on 7" factory wheel? Found a new set very cheap Cooper Discovery A/T3. Running 235 75 15 now.

Sharp G20 Dino. The Factory wheel will be fine. I'd measure overall diameter of both tires, turn wheels lock to lock with current setup, and measure for clearace . See whatcha got. A 235 is small. I say it fits. You can always airbag it. grinBe nice if you could air one or two up and try it.

Notice no rear sag,,,,I put AirLift bags in rear with all new shocks what a difference,,,,seeing lots of 16's out there I guess that's more common then 15's...may go with 16's and use 255 70 16 same revs or 245 little wider,,,seen these too, love Ralleys but none local,,,,these Rallys are 4 hours away 15x7 would go with 30 " or 255 on Rallys

A lot of '90s and early 2000s vehicles have 16" wheels, so they're not as odd-ball as they may seem, but they're nowhere near as common as 15s.

I use Tire Calculator online to see dimensions it really helps...I hear ya Rusty,,,I check Craigs list and market place daily still looking for something I like,,,what are ur thoughts on spacer just on rear?
Posted By: Rusty Pancelode Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 10th 2021 10:07 pm
I've never used spacers on anything I've ever owned (I've had 60 some-odd cars), so I couldn't tell you anything about any personal experience.
I also don't have any friends to ask about it either, as none of them run any spacers.

From a physics standpoint...
They push the wheel away from the hub, so the forces on the hub and bearings change...
They add a piece between the wheel and the hub, so there's another possible failure point...
They bolt to the hub/drum, then the wheel bolts to the spacer. That's ten bolt/lug torque instances per wheel.

I've heard people claim that they've run spacers for years with no issues.
I've also heard people claim that they've lost a wheel, and I've seen many pictures online of spacer setups that have come apart (who knows if any of those were installed properly).

I'm probably the worst one to ask about spacers, but you asked my thoughts, so there you are.
lol

Thanks,,,,you know how the rear is stuck in further then the front,,,not a big deal best not to mess with it...
Going to look at these tomorrow 16x8 American 8 hole wheels,,,,not holes for caps. How would I mount caps on them? They sell GMC caps with or without holes for mounting?????Does the lug nut hold them on?
I can go with after market American caps but rather have GMC. Only asking $100 for all 4

On a lot of those type wheels, the center cap pushes in from the back and has a little lip on it to hold it in place.
You'd just have to measure and get the right size center cap.

Thanks,,,really like the GMC or Chevy 5 hole caps,,,,,
Tell me if 255 70 16 ok on 8' wheels are ok tire calculator looks like too narrow and says to use 255 65 but damn that's a expensive tire hard to find tire,,,,rather get 255 70 245 or 235
So I guess 70 or 65? Walmart has Roll Back on Cooper 245 70 16 $90 each, other wise same tire 255 65 16 $150 and up each
Posted By: Rusty Pancelode Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 12th 2021 6:03 pm
What tire calculator are you using that says a 255mm wide tire is too narrow for an 8" wheel?
Most of the ones I've seen say it's on the too wide side, with 245 being the upper limit from a handling standpoint.
Wider tires will fit but are not generally recommended.

Just so we're on the same page...
The first number of the tire size is the tread width in millimeters.

The 70 and 65 in the tire size are the height from the wheel to the tread.
It refers to the height of the tire in relation to the width (aspect ratio) and is listed as a percentage.

So, both a 255 70/16 and a 255 65/16 are the same width, with the 255 70/16 being taller (by 5% of 255mm or 12.75mm).

[Linked Image]Wheel-Size.com it looks up ur factory wheel and then u put in other sizes to compare,,,
These are what I got today for $80 for 4.... 16x8 4.5 back space 0 offset
So 70's will be ok?

I put in 16x8 and 255 16 8 and checked the revs and it's 661 Stock is 699 Revs and 30" might rub,,,, want to get as close as possible .245 16 8 is 684 revs and 29.5"

I have 245 75 16 on my G30 no rubbing

245 75 16 that's 30.5 " tire,,,,,,I'm just wondering now that I got these Baja 16's if 70's will not be too narrow,,,really want 235 70 16 or 245 70 16,,,people may not mount them for me.
May go staggered 255 70 16 rear 235 70 16 front,,,,these wheels are huge to me.....mounted up front wheel w/o tire and they are close to everything but seems to be ok,,,,hub rings coming of course 83-78.1
Bottom line what's smallest tire you would run on 16x8???? for front only of course....
Frscke1 those are on 8" ?
Posted By: frscke1 Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 13th 2021 5:55 pm
Nope there 6.5' rims .... the tires are 8 wide

I should just wait for 7" Rallys ,,,these 8" rims are giving me fits,,,I'm cleaning them up so I know I can get my $ out of them....still thinkin'
Posted By: frscke1 Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 14th 2021 3:26 am
Those 8" rims probly are for a 10"wide tire .... put a wider or thinner tire on a rim and the bead wont lock up right and you risk losin a tire goin around a corner.
Posted By: NateB Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 14th 2021 1:29 pm
From a personal note...on my 93 G20 I'm running 255-70-15 on all four corners on an 8" Rally wheel. No rubbing in the back, BUT on the front I have to be careful hitting dips in the road or going over speed bumps because the outer wall of the tire will slight rub on the inner lip of the wheel wheel. As with most vans the front track is wider than the rear track.

I just go slow and I don't have any issues.
Posted By: Dino Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 15th 2021 8:18 pm
Thanks Nate that's what I wanted to know,,,,,just wondering about turning and rubbing,,,,think I'm gonna go with 245 70 16 front 29.1x 9.6 255 75 16 rear 31.1 x10 fill out the rear well better and have airbags....
Going to take a rim to local tire shop to be sure Wal Mart doesn't know sh**....
Now if I can decide on RWL or Black side wall,,,lol
Posted By: Dino Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 17th 2021 10:15 pm
Ok,,,finally I think I've made a choice,,,,American Racing 16x8 5x5 4"BS, 0 offset, 8 hole Baja Polished got for $80.
(4)Center A/R 3.27"caps ordered on ebay $55
(4)Hubcentric rings 83x78.1 Summit $16 and (20)1/2x20x1.38 lugs $15
Tires Wal Mart General Grabber STX2 235 70 16 front $93 each OWL Haven't ordered yet.
255 70 16 rear $110 each OWL Haven't ordered yet.
What do you think?
Posted By: Dino Re: 30x9.5x15 - June 29th 2021 6:09 pm
So I went with 245 70 16 all 4, put front on today and drive and no problems. They are Finalist Verreno H/T extra load rated so I like the fact they are heavy duty but not aggressive with road noise. Sale at Wal Mart for $83 each Liked the Generals but to aggressive I think plus lot more $$.
Stupid Wal Mart said all 4 were in but only 2 so I go back tomorrow for rears.....Good picture shows both factory and American Racing.
Note: Used hub rings 83.06 x 78.1 but American Racing caps wouldn't let me fit them so had to shave a little but most importantly is the hub rings fit tight on hub and slide in inside of AR caps...we shall see I'll check lugs after a few miles....

Those new rims are way nicer than what you had ....Check the DOT date !... wally world has a habit of selling older tires with a mix of DOT dates as they get the left overs at a discount ...Ins companies use DOT dates against you if a tire blows and causes an accident ... try to get the most currant and if you can get matching DOT dates...

"Does tire manufacture date matter?
Every tire has a birth date—the day it was manufactured—and an expiration date that is six years from that manufacture date. Most automobile manufacturers warn drivers to replace vehicle tires after six years. To wait any longer than that is a gamble with tire integrity and is risky for drivers. "

Dino

Very nice 95!

Question, do you have a lift on the front? I know you said you were using air shocks on the rear, but the van looks like it has a lift.

Curious to know how the 16" rims and new tires do and if they rub when turning. Look forward to seeing a pic with all 4 new tires and rims.

Thanks guys, Yes, I've heard about Wally World selling blems I looked these over pretty good but will check date code.Happened to find them on the "roll back" page.
Yes AirLite on rear but the Mono shocks I put on really are great the old shocks were trash and really lifted the truck back to stock height,,,KYB MonoMax all 4.
More to follow.....

I got all 4 on and mounted, date code 32/20...32 week of 2020 so not to bad.
I may adjust air in rear on level ground. Drove great! OMG those old "P" series235 75 15 are way to narrow, no more body roll, handles a lot better.
Of course the front looks bigger then rears but that's normal but decided to go all 4 same for rotation one spare etc....No rub full turns. I think for me 245 70 16 on 16x8 was right choice would have loved some 16x7 Rallyes but these look and drove well. If I had 15x7 Rallyes would have went with 255 70 15
Not a daily driver but a incognito camper, batteries, frig, portable a/c, bed, gear.

Thank you for the follow up!

I am on the edge of pulling the trigger on some 15x8 but worried they would rub. I don't have air bags in the rear, but do have new shocks. You have help me edge closer to the new rims. I do want to stay with stock size as I have 65,000 original miles on a 1992 and don't want to throw off the speedometer. Give me a few weeks to max a month and I will post pics too.

Those new rims should get you to Van Nataionals and back. Maybe see ya there!

Cool Beans! I think 255 70 15 my be ur best bet on those,,,,I use a lot of tire calculators on line to check revs and advise from great guys on here! I think as long as u don't go crazy with 30 to 31 In tires u should be alright.....check offset and b/s unless stock wheels used....good luck and thx...
