Re-covering a dashboard (1985 Chevy G20)

Re-covering a dashboard (1985 Chevy G20) - January 08th 2018 3:26 pm

I'm going to be recovering the dashboard in my 1985 G20 while it's out of the vehicle. It's currently blue and the stock vinyl is old and cracking. I want to remove as much of the old covering as possible and wrap it in black leather, maybe something diamond stitched.

I think I have watched enough youtube tutorials to give me the confidence I need to try it on my own, but was wondering if anyone has done this with the later 3rd gen Chevy dash and might share some pictures of the completed project and maybe during? It seems mostly flat and simple, but I am stressing about the leading edge around the defroster vents. Not sure how best to handle the complex area there. Maybe cut the leather short and add some stainless or chrome vent covers? I've got a couple ideas bouncing around in my head but want to see what others have done.

I know I should probably start with an easier piece to learn on, but this is the first one I need done..

Sounds like you want to go the custom route vs just finding a good stock replacement dash cover...?

I wouldn't be opposed to a good shape stock black dash but in every van I have seen in the junkyards around here the dashes are in poor condition, and I've only seen 1 that was black..

Plus, I just figured that I'll probably have to do several other parts as I build out the interior, it would look best if the dash material matched.

Only reason I ask is cuz I recently found a parts van with a good blue dash.

Ah. I gotcha. I want to get rid of the blue to be completely honest.

OK - just thought I'd offer. The black will look better with your awsome paint anyway.

I'm undertaking the same project on my Ford. My dash pad is all cracked and faded so I am going clean up and fill the cracks and then wrap it with the same black diamond stitch I'm using on the door cards and walls in the back.

I don't have any tips yet since I have to wait until it warms up some. If I tried to take the dash apart now I would break everything that was plastic.

Once the paint was done, I realized just how bad the dash looked lol.. Plus it will be much easier to deal with before I put the glass back in.

No experience doing it myself, but there are some good dash pad refinish thread on ThirdGen.org. Here are a few.
