My chevy collection
The 93 GMC and the 69 chevy have traded places. The 93 is now hogging up the garage space as I redo the engine and front end.
The 95 GMC PU is my daily driver.
The red Extreme Blazer is the wifes daily driver. As soon as the 93 gets back on the road it will serve as a daily driver also.
The 76 Van will replace the 95 GMC puke up as a daily driver........Wookee

And this is my 86, too clean to pass on. $500 with a blown engine. No rust at the bottom of the door at all, inside or out. Next to nothing on the van at all, except for one small quarter size hole in front of the right rear wheel. Pretty solid for a 20 year old Michigan van !

This is my 1977 Chevy G20 Panel Van. I'm still trying to think of a name for it.

Ooh, I really like 'Black Tie Affair'... the only thing is it's actually a really dark blue. My other van is black, but it's a turd, so I won't waste the name on that van.
I'll have to keep that one in mind in case I ever get it repainted.. I may end up eventually going with black. My family and friends have dubbed my two vans 'kidnapper van' - but somehow that doesn't seem like a good 'show' name

Cops would have a field day.
hey Bill, I REALLY like your van! the bumper/grille guard is sweet, and the deck on top is good stuff. we used to climb the ladder and walk around on top of my van (before it was mine) to take pictures on our trips across country and I always thought that an "obsevation deck" would be a great idea over the standard luggage rack. are the deck and bumper/guard custom fabricated, or are those available somewhere? I really like the utilitarian look of your van.
Really like the Express... I'm used to seeing the standard white work vans all around town, but this one really looks nice. Do tell where you got that brush guard...
Here is Shangra_La:

Picked it up for $500. Put $200 into Timing Kit, Gaskets, Cap, Coil, Rotor, Pickup Coil, Coil and Battery. All that was really wrong with it was the pickup coil. The guy I bought it from had it tore down to Timing Chain. Runs like a champ for being 20 yrs. Needs timing dialed in. Got some slipping in reverse.

Thanks, still very much a work in progress as far as the interior i took down alot of the exterior shots on this site but heres a little bit of the interior http://www.cardomain.com/ride/543572/
not sure what will happen with it... got alot of ideas. it IS a daily driver, frequent light hauler, and occasional tripmaker and I do like the comfort of anonymity and abiguity of a plain unmarked astro, but I will be doing something with it. I want to do some sort of subtle, futuristic, electro looking paint design incorperated into wide metallic stripe(s)... I'll be using rustoleum rattle cans and masking tape.
often needing to haul light, but bulky and irregular things justifies walls inside to protect the skin...
I've thought about lifting the rear 2" and getting slightly bigger tires back there...
maybe, eventually make this the "2001 space odessy" themed van I've wanted?
That Early Chevy Van was used by the Hurst Company in the late 60's early 70's and showed up at "Drag Strips" and repaired Hurst shifters, etc., for people. B.W.

Finally found this thread again. Bringing it back to the top. Alot of the picture links are gone, so please post up your GM vans. Here's another pic of mine. Not much change since the start of this thread. LOL, Brad
Pat, plenty of space in the gagarge, huh ! 2 inch higher and it wont go in lol ! Can you tell me the size of your cragar wheels with the offset if possible ??? Thanks Nice van !
Hey, hirider Welcome to the forum! When we built the house 2 years ago after the framing was done and the roof was on my wife says ..."Now your vans will fit in the garage right!" There was a Long Pause and I said sure no problem. The doors are 7 feet but I should of had 8 foot door built just for the extra room, the vans fit no problem ...Whew! That picture makes them look alot closer than it is.
As for the rims they are (15x10 Back) (15x8 Front) spinners got on Ebay for $50
here's some pic's of my buddies van that i am redo'n for him, its currently in the shop having all new interior done on it. http://www.oldskoolvans.com
Here is the unforunate "down side" to building a "Daily Driver". I had a no side door Early that I considered a "Show Van" but I wanted to drive back and froth to work in a van also.A co worker put this 77 up for sale freash poorly done black Imron paint job ,a 350/Th350 auto.I drove the van for a while.Rebuilt the 350, headers new exaust new tires on all four corners. It was supposed to go to the paint shop on Monday. On Thursday night I was making the left had turn into out van club meeting and got nailed from behind by another van and drove into uncomming traffic.I got center punched by a Toyota pick up comming the other way. My oldest dauhghter was in the van next to me in a car seat between the seats.Luckily she did not get hurt. All I got out of the deal was a nasty case of whip lash. The van did not fair out so well.I truly beleve if I was not driving a van it would have been allot worse.........
I only got to attend 2 events with this van,"Van Stomp" and "Spring Thaw".I never got good any pictures of it before the crash.............Wookee
Unfortunatly all I had a liability at the time.I bought the van back from the insurance company and had to sue the other guy who had nothing. After 4 years of haggleing all I got out of the whole deal was $4,000.00.That would not pay for an amublance ride now a days.Nobody gets rich off of these things, except for the layers and the insurance companys.......
I had that van, a 71 Monte Carlo, and my Early.Looking back on it know I am real happy I was in the van.I don't think the Monte or the Early would have took the hit as well as this van did......
I'd love to have a 3rd Generation, but we already have a '93 Astro & '94 Safari in the "Vanport" the '69 Vista-Chop in the garage, an '89 Dodge sitting in front of the garage and trying to squeeze a '67 8-Door Dodge somewhere when it comes back from restoration? And all of this on just a 65' x 50' lot! B.W.
Don't feel like the lone ranger Rollie,my garage is FULL my 93 GMC is there waitng for me to get back to it along with an 86 Z28 that I am in the middle of redoning all the poorly done work I had paid sombody to do last year.I am really glad I don't have to feed them all........LOL The 3rd gen is a factory a/c VAN it just needs some fairly minor TLC.It will be a "rat van" when it first comes out.Because it has power steering and brakes the wife will drive it.She fell in love with the 77 and has loved driving vans ever since. It will be set up to pull a trailer............
updated the webpage on our 79 chevy shorty, will have more pics next week,. was supposed to went this weekend and got pictures but i blew the rear diff out of my suburban this morning http://www.crazz.org/rear the van webpage is http://www.oldskoolvans.com
SWEET,the original Black is not that hard to match up and "cut in"....... another long term van owner......
the van "Black Gold" thats in this thread had most of its original Black factory lauquer paint still in tact on that van.The custom mods were done and then "cut in"......
thanks brad, windows aren't so bad. Mine are covered from the inside. Way I see it, vans are kind of like muscle cars, you'd take a four door if it was in the right shape and right price.
I'm right there with ya vanticipation. Lots of work. Luckily I've got about 52 years left to work on if I base my guess on the average life span of a non smoking male.
My first Chevy Van, bought in 2005, it's a 86' Beauville 6.2 Diesel This is my 65' this is my 69' before ive got the windows welded. this is as you can see after welding
by the way, with those outrages fuelprices you guys got over there, maybe you should convert to liquid propan, make it a bit fun for your wallet again.
Thought I would bring this back to the top. Here's a pic of the 454 in my 72 shorty. I drove it the 13th of Dec & noticed alot of water coming out of the drivers side exhaust. Didn't think much of it. Tried to start it on New Years eve & the engine was locked up. Today I pulled out the plugs on the drivers side & #7 cylinder was full of water. Pulled all the plugs & it still wouldn't turn over. Rings must be rusted. Anyways, I started tearing it down. Not sure if I can get the drivers side head off in the van. Not much room. Darn bigblock! Great way to start the new year.:( Brad
Well, I continued work on van today. After I pulled the starter, I was able to turn the engine over by hand. Starter must have been stuck. I was able to get the drivers head off with the engine in the van. Not saying it was easy, but it can be done. I couldn't really see anything wrong with the gasket, but the engine has been together for 24 years. Just hoping the head or the engine block isn't cracked somewhere. Will pull the other head off & get them both checked. Oh what fun. Brad
Doesn't look to bad in there for the age. Funny it looks like there are 2 different pistons in it. The one with the water has a ring in it while the next one doesn't?
Took the head in & was going to have them pressure check it for cracks. Found a big crack next to the valve in # 3. I wasn't even looking at # 3 because #7 cylinder had all the water. Needless to say, I am done for the year now. Brad
Bummer Dude. Why done for the year tho? Check with your local NAPA. They used to sell refurbished head kits for a few hundred bucks. Swap them out and go. Unless of coarse these are not stock heads?
Edelbrock heads are 999.00 each! My van isn't worth that! I just located a pair of used heads from a good friend. Hope to have the van back running by next weekend. WOOOOHOOOO,Brad
Brad, if you go with the ford style rubber "unbrella" valve seals you will find they work ALLOT better thanthe brass press in style that Chevy uses. I have used them in a hi milage 305 and I am getting ready to put them in the crate 350 in the "Beast" the good thing is while you have the heads off you can undo the valve spring keepers slide the seals down the valve stems and reassemble them. I had to use compressed air in each cylender to install the ones I replaced........
Bad news, nobody will just do the guide seals. Gonna cost me $500.00 & up to do the heads. Putting the van out to pasture now. Once again, I am done for the year. Brad
Brad, the Ford style valve seals can be installed with out any machine work. You might have to rent a valve spring compresser tool but thats it. If you don't mind a puff of oil smoke when you first fire up the engine stick the heads on and run them. How many miles does this big block have on it?
Brad - if you need 454 heads... LMK around what year and what not, i got a few buddies that dirt track race and use 454.... Let alone i got some buddy's with JET boats and a few have 454 heads stacked sky high on his shelfs, let alone blocks and what not...
Galaxy, where did you get the pass and rear captain chair's from... I like the reclining deal... Certain year van? or they custom? Reply:
The seats were custom made by kellogg conversion co. They were in Elkheart IN. Went out of busness years ago. The seat on the pass side was in the back, I moved it when I built the cabinets.
too bad its illegal to toss my lazy boy in there... seats look awesome. Ill have to check out junkyards and see if possibly any conversain vans had them or bought them etc. def a must have right there
Galaxy, that's a really awesome van you've got there! The Kellogg recliner seats just blow my mind - you're so fortunate!
A question about your window tint - I've seen that purple looking tint in some vans at the boneyard and on some of the popout windows I pulled. I had asked about it here a couple of weeks ago... the general consensus was that that the tint was a dark dye which was unstable. Was yours originally darker and turned purple over time? Thanks.
Hey Ram4ever, the two windows in the front doors I did with light smoke window tint. All the other windows were done with limo tint (that is the darkest) I think that from sitting in the sun at van runs it has faded a little. The color that your seeing may just be a reflection.
I really like the idea of Galaxy's Kellogg recliner chairs, so I poked around and found that there are still recliner chairs made for vans. I saw these VIP hi-back recliners at www.customvan.com
Ram4ever, ive been on that webpage b4 and never even noticed that... Thanks. ut gotta think the comfort of those seats are worth it... exspecially if ur married, hahaha make the wife fall asleep all recliened back on a trip... nicee...
One thing you have to watch with the newer recliners is most of them are made for the rear of RV's. They are a bit wider than a standard front seat. If you use them in the front you may have to remove them to get the dog house off. Just watch the width.
totally not cool. before i buy im sure ill call around and get the full scoop. it's gotta recline and footrest... thatd get the wife off my back for long trips... if there in te back fine by me
but if one were to have it as the passenger seat you know, i dont think i've owned a vechile that wasnt a challenge to work on * doh !!!! *
Another item of note on the seats, they are full power! One switch to recline the back And a second switch to move out the footrest. None of that stuff was working when I bought the van, probably about 20 hours on each chair to get them working
now ur just rubbing it in. next your gonna tell me that you have a button to turn the rear bench into a bed with the flip of a switch. hehe well thats good i didnt know ya when the seats didnt work. i would been the ass of a friend saying you should just part with them... hehehe def nice
Wtf... i totally didnt know this... i guess i needa read through the forums alot alot more than i have been lately. and ive been doing it alot! thats crazy... hmmm guess ill be spending some money to live in the comfort... then agian the wives seat will have to be done by hand. ill cheap out on that one j/k

Yea, the rear bench / bed is power also. I moved the switch up to the dash for ease of operation. It is also fun to play with when someone is sitting back there lol
Cali Rust free.... Not! Actually, the lights behind the grill are old Dick Cepek 185,000 candle power driving lights Yes, they are bright! Here's a pic from a few years ago when I was mounting them.
As for the head, after having 3 shops tell me they wouldn't do just the valve stem seals in the head I did locate, I went ahead & put the original head back on. I checked everything with a straightedge & all was good. I think the head gasket was the only problem. Torquing the head down in the van was not fun,but I did manage to get it done. Has been running a week now & drove it almost 200 miles up & back to the EconO West event Sat. Ran 175-180 & still seems to run real nice. Brad
Well, what look are you thinking about? Are you going to keep it lifted or lower it down? Will it be used for work, fun, camping etc? there are lots of ideas here on vanning.com & you might also look at my sites. They are listed in my sig. Welcome & good luck.Brad
i think it would look great by a chrome grille , paint job , chrome exhaust tips and a windshield visor . without going overboard , but yet it would complete the exterior keeping 99% stock except for visor . there ya go a brand new van . and maybe even paint rims same as van with new chrome lug nuts . yea thats it . good luck with it.
heres the beast, still waiting to pull her out, good thing is someone stole the gas years ago so i dont have to clean the tank, just replace a few stolen hoses, some new antifreez and oil and a tune up, check the rest of the fluids and she should be good
Been working on the 72 the last couple days. Installed these new captains chairs & repainted my dash black. The seats came with swivel bases & they recline...price was free! Oh, gotta have a working 8-Track player too! One day the interior might be finished. Brad
More pics of the 2nd Gen Chevy. Owner has had it since 71! Is in the upholstery shop right now. Brad Flairs are for an older Mustang & notice the heart shape around the gas filler. Those wheels are original U S slots! 10" in back! One sweet early!
1978 G20; Shortwheel base; 350 V8- 4 Brl; TH-350 Trans; 3:42 gear; Hedman Headers; Dyna Max mufflers (exhaust exits out each side under the running boards...sound like a Hot-Rod); PS/PB/AC/Tilt Wheel
Been wanting a full set of those 15" turbines for my van as well. Always LOVED that style wheel. I have a very similar set on my 78 Caprice Classic. :-)
i have been collecting that type of rims the last couple of yrs, found some 9x15 with the big lug pattern for my chevy shorty this summer, i have now 28 turbines most of them are 4.5 and 4 3/4 pattern.
im not sure what brand they are, it doesn't say on the backside either. i just checked your other post on your wheels, im quite sure it's not western wheels. all of those western wheels with the same spoke pattern i have seen, the spokes don't end level with the rimside. im quite sure that we can rule out E/T also, since i have a set of those with same pattern and the don't look the same at all. i will go down to my other garage later tonight and check the Appliance rims that i have for my panel Truck, haven't seen those wheels in about a year, so i might need that to get a smile on my face. i'll let you know as soon as i have checked them out, heck, might even take some pics of them
the turbines are mounted, now i just need to lower the van a bit in the front need to get it down a bit in front! might need some flares but the cops might not notice the wheels when they see these :P got me a wing also, need a little fixing and some flat black paint, then i should be good to go
thanks yer its going to be a highway 61 style van got everything to complete it just need the porthole windows now and I am ready to go...... will get some pics of her crusing the uk streets. that'll be strange to see. as far as I no there isnt another over here from the 70's era
Well it's finally pretty much done....still need to get the seats re-upholstered and will do some engine "dress up" this coming winter but the outside is finished...

Well, she ain't a fancy surf van or camper, but she's a sweet old girl.
1987 G20 Bonaventure. It was my Mom's van. She had been very ill for the last 3 or 4 years, and it pretty much sat during that time. In Feb 2010 I brought it over to my place so I could drive it every now and then.
Mom passed in March, so she's officially mine now.
With the exception of a factory-sponsored re-spray about 15 years ago (you guys are well aware of GM's paint problems in the late 80's I'm sure), she is 100% original. Only 44k original miles. Even the belts and hoses are original. Only fluids and maint items have ever been replaced.
whoops i post mainly in this part of the forum but i put all my van pics HERE as you can see a lot of work has been done already, my hubby has done more since these have been posted i will try and get more photos up loaded at some point
This is my new van. Cost me $1000. It's a 76 4x4 that needs some electric work, but the engine ran strong....Apparently too strong. I guess I was going over 80 on my way home, and didn't even notice since the speedo is one of the electric issues lol. I had someone following me since it was a maiden voyage (2 hours) and he kept falling behind. I figured it was just because he was in a ford or something, but oh well. Anyway here it is.
My brother is in this one, and he's 6'1" just for perspective.

actually the factory speedo in that year van is cable driven. Of coarse it is hard to tell what they did when the conversion was done......
Of coarse it is hard to tell what they did when the conversion was done......
You're telling me! I have a Ford NP205 Transfer Case tail-shaft in my 78 Chevy. The speedometer cable is factory from the speedometer down but there is an 'adapter cable' of sorts that has a female side for the end of the Chevy speedometer cable and a Ford style plug in speedometer gear on the other side. unfortunately that's the cable that broke and I'm having a hell of a time trying to find a replacement that will work.
Just worked out how to put up an image so here is my 1987 G20 conversion, had a pretty good interior when I got it 6 months ago but was in need of much TLC.
I decided to take out most of the woodwork as some of it was in poor condition and some of it had been replaced (badly)
It came with really great chrome wheels but they were too large and rubbed in a few places, I decided it would be better to get something that fitted and was lucky enough to find these original '77 Cadilac wires(not hubcaps)
Quite a few jobs already done (exhaust/shocks/park brake/door seals) with many more to do.
Some rust holes in the rear floor around the wheels and the smaller side door is bad at the bottom (see photo), not sure what to do with that.
The smaller side door rust damage, any suggestions ? Replace or repair ?
thanks guys, this Van is in sweden at the moment, i have never seen it live, but i had a friend of mine check it out and i'm told that this one is in very good condition bodywise, but it has been sitting for several yrs so i should trailer it home. the strange thig about this is that all the other earlies i got has been bought more or less at the same distance from where i live as this one (6hrs+), this is the best looking one and this is the only of them that not will be driven home
Long day yesterday, woke up at 6am, go to work at 7am. ready to go to sweden to pick up early at 6pm ready to pick up early in sweden at 10pm, eat some pizza with fellow vanners at 11pm, go home at midnight. home at 3:30 am, take of the early at 3:45am trailer parked and im ready to go to bed at 4:30am
was it worth it, but ofcourse
not bad for a Van that was kustomized atleast 26yrs ago, i would go so far as calling it 98% rustfree!
this seems like a very solid built Van, ofcourse it need a little tlc, and i have not control of what parts of the interior that is still there or missing. anyways, not going to do much changes on this Van, i'm quite sure that i'm gonna give it some other wheels. i have a few different ones, but i'm not sure where to go. western mags, ansen sprint mags, shelby serpent II or appliance steel spoke. descissions descissions
also thinking to give it some flake in the paint, live it up a bit
A few pictures of this van was seen on the V.C.V.C site a couple years back. From the pictures it did looked like it attended van events on the other side of the pond. I did not know it was powered with a small block. I like every thing about it except for the placement of the windows on the drivers side. Good looking 1st gen...... It really does not look like it will need much to get her road worthy.

..........Wookee
it was built in early eighties, and as we can see with most of the vans built back then, stupid was very popular windowwise. i hope to get it on the road with norwegian plates before next season, hopefully there will be a easy winter here
Actually there where lots of vans built in the 80's that did not have stupid window problems...... 70's 80's 90's name the year the problem still occurs.
I cant remember if I posted a picture of my van on this thread or not so here's one; I think this van would look sharp with the blacked out headlight and turn signal covers. That is my next planned upgrade.
This is my favourite photo of our vandura. Taken maybe 15 years ago when it was in good shape. Lovin the original hubcap on the front wheel, I wonder can you still get them?
Just got this 1976 G20 5.7L V8 with a slipping transmission for $850 and drove it home. Engine is great. Bringing into the transmission shop tomorrow to get their diagnosis/price and hopefully I won't go flat broke. Fingers crossed for a good deal, else I go dig through the Craigslist ads and settle for something shifty. Came with a free canoe rack that required no holes drilled and a set of studded snow tires.
but as of late , i kinda went back to the full sized vans . the wife still has her astro .....
but i've gone back to the full sized chevy conversions . the green one is a parts van now cuz i found frame rot by the back wheels . the white one has all new suspension & steering componants , new shocks on all 4 corners all new brake system including rear lines , new cooling system , tune up etc..... my wheels & tires will be swapped over very soon & then i can start o the interior mods ..
heres my 95 astro high top i gave up to go back to the full sized rigs ....
Well i never really added any pictures of my van on here because it was sitting in the body shop for the first part of this summer so i figured now i might as well jam them up here, let me know what yas think.
Very nice.I really the new paint.Did you install that sunroof yourself? Don't think I have seen a high top with one.I also the the trailer pics with your wheelers.
Thanks guys, I love it, but no i didn't install it, came with it in 1984. my grandmother bought it brand new and i'm pretty sure she got it loaded. it was leaking, so I did have to pull it and take it apart to repair the weather seals and the frame but that's it
At a KOA in the GMC on the way to the RC Cola and Moonpie Festival in TN last summer. We're always the littlest motorhome. They still charge for the whole space even tho we only use a little bit of it......
Ok...where's all the pictures? It's gonna be spring someday right?
We escaped to Savannah for the weekend. 289 miles each way but It was warm and the sky's were blue..... Stayed Friday and Saturday night at the Savannah South KOA. The littlest motorhome..... Loafered during the day. It's a very clean campground and was packed at night. Some RVers had to dry camp in the parking lot! Some heading north and some heading south. Everybody's ready for the winter to end!!
We took the GMC and went loafering to the Georgia mountains this weekend for a picnic. Turned over 306K miles and countin'... good ole Quaker State oil.
took a few pics today while i was waiting on the wife at the Dr's . had to bring the camera to get a pic of my lighting control panel so the guys at east coast customs could see if they can replace it for me . its a low voltage unit with a circuit board , not the typical switch type .
Every one here knows how bad I have been wanting a Chevy again. This came home with me today. It's a project for my oldest son and I.His van his ideas.Him putting money he earns and labor into it.Unfortunately he is only 13 now ,so I will have to drive it for awhile and keep all the fluids moving.
The trip home was about 70 miles and she ran great.
amcochrane - Is that an old style grille on a newer (80s) van? I ask cuz the color scheme, emblem, mirrors and belt molding look newer. Please tell me yes......
1959- yes it is. '86 beauville with a '77 front grill and bumper. I saw the swap done on Hot Rod Garage and found the parts by chance for a price i couldnt refuse.

A night cell phone shot. Lots of work to do, tires are very cracked from sitting 10 plus years. Surface rust on roof needs immediate attention. I am thinking of painting rallyes black, removing running boards, rack and ladder. I do a lot of rocky crappy road excursions, thinking a large basket rack for roof, and rear door passenger spare tire holder with some sort of box for my generator and additional battery. Add inverter to inside of passenger rear door for a stand alone system for charging laptop, camera batrerys ect.
I painted my rallyes black. It was the cheapest mod that made the most difference. I like them that way, but I guess I like them silver too, because I thought yours looked great when I just saw them.
Recently got in the game, been driving and repairing daily.
That's a fine looking shorty. Start a build thread in the "Reader's Rides" section and keep us posted on the progress. We all love following along with builds and repairs.
