I have a 96 1 ton vandura that has scared me but good. I drove it home 50 miles on the freeway, and it was great until I hit the off ramp. Then it started shaking bad when I tried to slow down. In town it stops ok. Today I drove it home, and on the way I got cut off, and when I stomped the brakes, it made a horrendous noise but kept on rolling. Sources say it's the anti lock system failing. I think I found the fuse in a drawing somewhere, but am unsure what to do.

Even when your ABS isnt working you still have manual brakes ... if it made noise while stopping Id check your calipers & rotors 1st. then make sure you dont have air in your system .

By manual brakes you mean the ebrake?

No the ABS is basically power brakes ... the braking system without power asst will still stop the van. My ABS light has been on for 10 yrs. The brakes will work without the power asst, if it is the ABS system.

But that noise is another animal, it sounded mechanical ?

Did the pedal go to the floor ?

The noise was it a metallic sound ? like metal grinding ?

Did it sound like a gurgle like the brake res has air in it ?

Did it pull one way or another ? While hard on the brake ?

Sounded like a sick buzzer for a doorway. Pedal went way down, and the van kept rolling, but then stopped slowly. Felt like only 1 brake was working. Van didn't swerve but did nose dive. I have been driving vans for years, owned 2 diesel 6.2 GM vans with hydro boost, and a bunch of gassers. All light 3/4 or half ton vans. This is the first full; floater van I have owned. Owned a couple 8 bolt pickups but never in all my years have I had a truck stop in such a way. Was told to disconnect ABS and it would solve the issue, just have to locate the fuse.

Disconnecting the ABS fuse wont put fluid to the calipers to stop the van.
People that dont like ABS blame it for every thing & say disconnect or get rid of it.
Honestly I think its low on fluid, has air in the system or the porp valve is stuck ....

Looks like I have a lot of work to do. I will bleed the van, and inspect the brakes. Previous owner did replace at least one brake line. I was told everything was safe to travel with, I drove it 50 miles down the interstate with no issues until I got to my off ramp. That was when it made a lot of racket and shook hard enough to scare me. Drove it across town twice with no issues, twice, taking it to two different locations for storage. Then today bringing it home I get the shock of my life trying to avoid hitting two cars that deliberately pulled into my path. I had just finished driving 500 miles in my sisters car helping her out, and then this happens. I wonder how those two people would feel if they found out that I couldn't stop. I need to fix this van or ditch it before it kills someone. Thanks for the help.

G30...is this a hydro-boost system? Is this sick buzzer sound a warning of low system boost / pressuere?

Another thing to think of is a bad brake line, or there is crap in your fluid that clogged the line. Ive had my brake lines replaced (got air in the system) & had to go to a brake shop to have them do the ABS & I have never heard a alarm buzzing.

Figured you guys deserved an update. Firstly thank all of you for your help, you proved this to still be the best site for vanners. The van is dead and gone. Monday I went to insure it, and had the battery checked at Azone, and bought a new one. Spoke to the counter guy, he also said pull the fuse. So, I did, the light came on, but the brakes worked perfectly. Couldn't believe my luck, was on top of the world for a whole city block. Got out onto the main road, and all of a sudden the tranny only has low gear, will not shift up no matter what I try. I decide to turn off onto a side street, and repl;ace the fuse, thinking the systems are interconnected somehow. Put the fuse back in, and now the van refuses to start, just cranks. I lift the hood, and look it over, and a guy pulls up on a Victory bike and says call his shop, they will come out and help. I thank him, call them, and end up agreeing to a tow instead. Can't leave the van in the street, all my tools are in it now. I had spent Sunday loading it so I could work on it. After he leaves I pull the dog house and start tinkering, But before I can check anything out, the truck arrives. At the shop, they say the fuel pump is shot, and it's over $500 to repair. Due to the rust body they say I will likely have to replace tank and lines as well., total bill could be 1500 clams. And that says nothing about the tranny, or the brakes. As it is being loaded onto the flatbed I notice the left rear wheel sticking. I had to tell them to stop work and that I would have the truck gone by Tuesday night. I gave it to a salvage yard, they let me keep my new battery. Another $1500 dollars out the window.I didn't even get 50 miles out of that van. It will be years before I can save up if ever for another van. Silver lining, I didn't get hurt, I got my tools back, and that van wont hurt anyone any more.

I'm sorry that turned out so badly for you Brian. But you're right...got your tools, not injured...those are good things.
