WHat to use? What's the sticky aluminum foil thing? Use that and home depot foamular?

The aluminum foil with sticky tar backing is a sound deadener/ sound proofing: Dynomat, Rattletrap, Fatmat and other brands. Home Depot has something similar for much less that is for roofing and it comes in rolls. I used Dynomat in my '64 VW bug with great results. But I don't have any experience with the Home Depot roofing rolls.

The Foamular is foam board used for insulation.

Hope this helps.

The sticky stuff from the home improvement stores is called "Peel & Seal" and it works okay. Not nearly as well as Dynamat, but still decent for the money. I used some in the roof of my wife's Jeep XJ, and I'm pleased with it. If I ever do this again though, I may opt for adding some "Reflectix" which can usually be found at the home improvement stores as well.

Okay but doesn't Reflectix need a 3/4" air space in order for it to work properly? Check out the instructions:

I think you did well with the Peal 'n Seal as long as it's still adhering to the roof, especially in extreme weather heat.

quiet1, here's a great thread I found on insulation that goes much more in depth:

Reflectix, I've used it with great results.

If you're gonna be out in the cold with heat inside the van, you can cut down on the cold steel walls sweating by using the Reflectix directly on the outside walls as a moisture/condensate prevention. If the wall ain't cold then the moisture in the inside air can't condense on those walls. Van stays drier inside.

If you're gonna be in the sunshine, it's also used directly on roof decking (and walls) with no gap as a radiant barrier to help keep the sunshine from heating the interior. If the walls ain't hot they can't transfer that heat to the inside air.

So it'll help both ways. And it's cheap.
The foam board on top of it will increase the R value by a bunch.
I've always used fiberglass over it, well supported to prevent sagging.

There's other materials that say they are specialized, that they work better but they sure cost more.
