New for 1978

New for 1978 - March 24th 2012 5:09 pm

I bought a 1978 brochure off of Ebay showing most of the changes for the 78 models. I'm sure this was just for consumers and didn't list all the intricate changes.

You can see one of the biggest changes right on the front cover on that maxi van. Check out the location of the side doors. They are moved forward and there's the infamous notch in the aft door. Also, and this applies to shorties too, is that there is a real b-pillar now as opposed to the fore side door butting right up to the front door as on earlier models.

Has anyone seen the "travel seats" in person? They look like a cool find.

Did anyone get 25 MPG with the 318 in a van?

Not in person, but there was an 86 or 87 for sale up in York, PA last year that had the travel seating package...even included a table that folded up against the wall. The van was so clean it almost looked garage kept. Man I was drooling over that one!

I looked up that dealership and it is in Los Angeles, California. So cool to have 12 Street Vans out front.

Sould be in Hayward Calif which is in the Bay area by San Jose etc. As far as 25 mpg with a 318 I used to get that and more all the time,12 mpg up the hills,13 mpg down the hills and that adds up tp 25 mpg right? smile

Back then , nobody cared. gas was still cheap $.48 to $.60 cents a gallon. I was a poor bass player in a good rock and roll band and still had gas for my van. Back then you could take your girl out to Red Lobster for lunch for $15, or fill your tank for less.

Re: New for 1978 - March 05th 2013 5:45 pm

Yup...I call the 78's "bastards" because of the one year only design.

Re: New for 1978 - March 13th 2013 2:36 pm

I always liked the early grilles versus the '79-up units. They got progressively uglier in the front as the years went by.

My brother-in-law had a '77 Street Van in dark metallic green with tan seats. It was a gorgeous van. It came with the late '70s chrome slotted wheels, the same as what was on the Lil' Red Express and Warlock trucks. That is probably my favorite year, in terms of overall styling.

Yup, I have to agree with the sentiment that the '78 is indeed the "bastard" of the bunch - early grille, but the first year of the newer dash, taillights, and seats.

Badass lookin van, Lurksman!

Miss my '78. Love the front end styling of the '71-'77, but the interior layout and dash in the '78-up vans is nicer IMHO. I'll have another one someday.
