When I did mine ('88 GMC 2500) I didn't actually remove the dash from inside the van. I wanted to finish the job in one day. After unbolting everything I just pulled the dash back out of the way and propped it up on a couple wood sticks. This gave me enough room to get to all the bolts on the heater box. As mentioned before, this is also a good time to replace any lights in the gauge cluster. And also replace the dash speakers. As I recall the only thing under the hood was the hoses. Remember to very careful with all the wires!
Good luck with your project.
