I have a 1977 Dodge Tradesman 200 with a 318 C.I. engine and 727 automatic transmission. I think one of my first steps with my project is going to be the addition of headers and dual exhaust. I could use some advice on a quality brand of headers that will fit well with no modifications to floor boards or linkages etc. If any of you have successfully put headers on one of these Dodges without any clearance etc. problems arising, I would love to know what you have done (i.e. brand of header etc.). It will save me alot of guesswork and possible headache. Also, have you had many problems with exhaust leaks from the headers? Thanks in advance for the advice. They were $110. The only problem is that they don't really sell headers for vans anymore, so the only ones you can get are for motorhomes, they still fit, but they hang lower than a van header would. It only took me 45 minutes from starting to take the minifolds off to revvin' the van w/ open headers, so the swap is really easy. Those are the only headers I've been able to find for a va without going to a blockhugger style, whch don't flow very well. Hope this helps! | | | Re: 318Headers #86062 April 10th 2003 12:14 am | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 | Thanks for the advice Hurricane II. Just curious, how much further down do the motor home headers hang? I would like to keep the exhaust system somewhat tucked up as I am planning to run the pipes out the side and don't want the appearance to be unsightly. Also, based on your experience, how concerned do I need to be about breaking manifold bolts as I try to loosen them? I don't have a torch so heating them is not an option. Thanks for your help. I seem to think they were Hookers. Sorry the mind aint what it used to be. The best advice I can give you is get COATED headers. They look great for a long time. Also, throw away any gaskets that come with them and go to a parts store and order "FELPRO" 'premium' header gaskets. They are a bit expensive, but they don't leak. ------------------ Ken Schwarz Tricky Truckers,N.J. | | | Re: 318Headers #86064 April 09th 2003 5:07 pm | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 | I'd be careful with the manifold bolts, use lots of penetrating oil. Mine came off fine, but I have friends who have broken them. From a distance, you can clearly see my headers hanging down, not really al that cool looking but it's all I could get. I have zoomies on my van, so I had the exhaust bent back up to go under the van and to the zoomies. So basically there is a "U" under my van. I can e-mail you a pic if you want to see if you could live with it. Or, if you find another company that makes actual van headers, let me know! | | | Re: 318Headers #86065 April 11th 2003 12:20 am | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 | Hurricane, An e-mailed picture would be great. Anything you can provide picture wise would be a great help. Due to the risks involved with breaking bolts, once I purchase a set of headers, I am considering taking them to a custom exhaust shop and having the exhaust shop do everything. Also, I have often thought zoomies would be cool. I didnt think they were still available. Where did you get yours? Thanks to all for the help so far, Joe. | | | Re: 318Headers #86066 April 13th 2003 11:07 pm | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 | I bought mine from JC Whitney back when they still sold them. I'm actually thinking about taking them off and running sidepipes. If i do I'll let you know. They need to be sandblasted and the tips are a little rusty ( I know where to get replacement tips), but they don't have any holes. | | | Re: 318Headers #86067 April 15th 2003 4:56 pm | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 | Did you get the pics I emailed you? | | | Re: 318Headers #86068 April 17th 2003 12:19 am | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 83 | Hurricane: Yes, and thank you for sending them. I appreciate all of your help. I could see what you were talking about regarding the headers hanging down. I have been meaning to call the Hedman company to see about pricing and availability, but just have'nt gotten around to it yet. Your information was a great help though. Thanks for keeping me in mind if you decide to part with the zoomies. Thank you, Joe. | | |
