I have the venerable 318 in both of my Dodges, 83 and 86. These things are slugs, neither will top 85mph. I want a little more. what can I expect with say, Edelbrock Performer cam and intake, headers, duals.
I have a 4 bbl carb & intake off a 360, (Thermoquad) how well wil this work on a 318? Anyone bothered roddin these mules?

Hi VANNER 68,
Will it's time to hit the books. I went though this with a 351 W in my FORD VAN . It's hard to understand why a 1969
Cougar with 351W had over 300 HP and a 79 VAN with 351W had 145 HP daa?
Now adays gas is rated R+M divided by RXM witch gives a higher octane number.Todays gas s~cks!
Because of Gov. you now have lower compression , retarded cam , and lean burn engine . O yawl lower gear ratios in the rear end.
Your next thing is headers and free flow exhaust system. Than raise the compression to 10 to 1 or less.
Find out what gears you have.

I have 2.73 gears in the 86 ( I have a 8 1/4' rear in there now,I have a 9 1/4" rear with unknown gearset and posi waiting) and unknown in the 83, but I'll bet it's a high 2's or low 3's cuz they both feel the same driving.

HI Again
I'm not much on dodge, But I just swapped my 318 out of my 96 RAM for my wife's 93 RAM CHARGER 318. Now she has low mileage on her engine.
When I bought my ford VAN in 1980 it would not stay at 60 on the Pa. turnpike past HARRISBURG. Had to use passing gear to stay with traffic. It had 1.65 to 1 rear end.
Sounds like you have a good rear end.
Have you checked the 2nd dairies to make sure they are wording. And getting gas?
A weak fuel pump or half clogged fuel filter could cause poor power at high speeds.
Has it been like this all the time?

It's 2 bbl on both, I have had the 86 since 1988, bought it with 40,000 on it and it never has had any guts. My 83 has 150,000 on it according to the previuos owner. I'm just lookin to see if ayone has done this before and if the results shown in the ads are even close to realistic. According to chilton's, the 318 puts out about 150 hp and Edelbrock says with the cam, intake and carb I could get 275hp, which would be nice. The 83 runs great, it's just slow. The 86 needs other engine work too, I may rebuild a 360 I have laying aroud and stab it in there.

you said it 150 HP that bad !! That air pollution for the 80s did a job on the big VANs
Fuel injection would be the best and the most $$$. Edelbrock about $1,700. BUT not sure?
You steal need a good cam and intake.
So go for the Performance package
I put headers Hooker and edelbrock cam & intake and holly 2b carb. on my VAN and got 25% better not a lot But drove better did OK on the hills till I started towing the camper. the low gears and 2b carb. was bad . so I built up a 460.

vanner68, years ago with my 79 dodge I took my stock 318, added a RV/towing cam, 4 barrel holley, aluminum intake and reworked the distributor to get more advance out of it, it all work nice, got more power about the same gas milage. also had dual exh on it already, never went with headers but may have helped more. Dont expect 275 horses, maybe more lick 200-225. And it always seems to take awhile to get the bugs worked out when you do modifications like this, but you should be satisfied when done I was.I also removed the cat converter and egr valve. Godd luck, Dan

Thank's all, for the help and info. The ad claims seemed a bit much, as I think they are using fresh, blueprinted short block for their dyno motors. 200 to 225 hp is fine. I don't need to set a land speed record, I just want to be able to pass a Kenworth on the freeway!

Did Edelbrook state the compression ratio?
A lot of the horse power left when they dropped the compression in the mid 70's.
you may have a 7.5 to 1 in your engine or less and those high performance engines have 11 to 1 or better.
My 79 351W was down to 7.3 to 1 ratio. My 78 460 CID was 8 to 1 but changed the piston to flat top brought the compression up to 9.3 to 1 ratio. At one point in the 70's Ford 351 where down to 7 to 1 compression ratio.
I'll bet you have dished out pistons.
The more the gas / air is compressed the faster the fuel burns witch creates more heat witch causes more pressure on the piston witch gives more power for the some amount of air / gas burned!! more power / gas mileage <!">
