Does anyone have any experience doing a header install on a van like this? I'd like to install headers and duals on mine. Thanks in advance! You should be able to find what you need at http://www.summitracing.com | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 11 stranger | stranger Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 11 | I've been looking at the kit that Summit has for dual exhaust with headers, but I'm not sure it's legal in Cal. Does anyone know the smog laws regarding that? My van is a '78 without a factory cat or any other factory smog stuff. I've been told that if it didn't have an original cat, it would be legal, but I don't want waste my time putting in a new exhaust just to find out that the smog guy says 'no way'. Any insight would be appreciated! | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 #85282 January 04th 2006 5:07 pm | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 57 journeyman | journeyman Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 57 | Just a few more years and the van will hit 30 years old. You don't have to have a smog check after that, right? | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 #85283 January 08th 2006 3:04 pm | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 3,059 Likes: 3 LOST SOUL | LOST SOUL Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 3,059 Likes: 3 | 78 should have had a cat on it from the factory. If it came with one, it will have to have one put back on it. There are aftermarket cats that are legal. Also, in Calif. the headers usually have to be smog legal, thus having a calif. smog legal part number on them. It can be done legal, just have to get all the correct parts. How are you able to smog it now without a cat? | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 #85284 March 06th 2006 2:17 am | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 57 journeyman | journeyman Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 57 | Just an FYI... I got a set of Hedman Elite Ceramic coated Hedders (p/n 69860) for my '77 that said it would work from '71 to '95 but we had to notch some metal from the frame and grind down a big ass frame bolt to get it to fit. I would go with the Hooker headers for $100 more, cause I spent a lot more than that in labor costs. I'm not sure if you'll have a better experience with the Hookers, but the Hedmans were a real beotch in the '77 at least. | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 #85285 March 06th 2006 11:31 am | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 199 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 199 | my 78 does'nt have a cat, and I had asked about this at some point and was told that it was possible that in 78, vans sold as work trucks did'nt come with cats for that last year.
I understand and am supportive of automotie emissions regulations, but california just seems hysterical about it, the rules seem like ther were extracted from someones a$$. and it is crazy that you could improve the emissions and mileage greatly and still be illegal for doing it. | | | Re: Headers on Chevy G20 w/350 #85286 March 06th 2006 12:58 pm | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 208 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 208 | As I recall, the Thorley Headers are a tri-y design, and are smog legal in CA, and are therefore legal most places. You would still need a cat and have to hook up the air injection if your van is so equipped. I have had Thorleys on my 71 Monte Carlo almost 19 years and have had no problems Fit is great, they don't leak, and I would probably get those for my van if I ever decide to upgrade.
As a hot rodder in So Cal I crank about the emissions laws, but it is very needed here as we have so many people driving in the southern region that air pollution is a very important consideration. Many vehicles from the mid 70's to the mid 80's had emission systems requiring much care and maintenance, and when these go away, the cars do run dirtier than with everything hooked up and running properly. Operative statement here is "running properly".
Also, the "Running 30 Year Exemption" in So Cal has been frozen, for the moment, at 1975 and older. Give it a few more years and they'll start it rolling again, as the percentage of old cars needing to be tracked is in rapid decline (read that as "not passing smog, going to the crusher"), and tracking theae cars for Smog Check is costly to the state.
A way around these smog laws is buy a complete, running newer tech (EFI) vehicle, and completely transfer the entire fuel management/emission system in to the older vehicle; computer, diagnostic port, check engine light, everything. The BAR will buy of clean installs, and issues with passing smog become a thing of the past as the vehicle will run much cleaner. This is what is happenning now to my '79 GMC.
Sorry for the long winded post, hope this helps someone.

They fit in real easily, and have lasted well. Mine has a cat, so I had to have a Y-pipe to route the exhaust into a catalytic converter (mine's a 3" inlet/outlet performance type, so I get clean air AND good exhaust flow).
But I think G20's & G30's didn't have a cat on them. I've got a 1977 GMC dually pickup (C/K 35) with a 454 and no cat (dual exhaust as well). It passes smog fine. | | |
