Am I dumb or are my friends cheap?

New to the forum here. Please let me know if this is better posted elsewhere
91 Chevy Shorty w/ 4.3
I had an appointment this morning with a local Midas to have my stock exhaust system exchanged for a set of headers I brought in, with new cat and mufflers and whatnot from them. The plan was headers to a dual-in-duel out cat(just behind my O2 sensor) into to separate mufflers then out in front of the rear tires. I showed up this morning and they asked me to reschedule because exhaust tech couldn't come to work.
After I told my buddies they looked at the quote all said I was high for being willing to pay what the shop wants for the job. One of them had almost the same job done by the same dude at the same shop a couple years ago for his 71'(350 w/ no cats) and he said he paid less than 700
Am I crazy for even considering it? Or is it a blessing in disguise? More than I wanted to pay but the breakdown doesn't seem too unreasonable to me. I'll ask another shop in town for a quote. I'd love to delete the cat altogether but I understand the ramifications and am not married to it. Just want to do some fun hot rod stuff to my van and hear the engine I've worked so hard to get running nice.
Thanks for reading!

For what I had done to my 454 4x4 2.5 all the way back from the manifolds thats twice the price.

So they want a grand to touch the motor n install the headers.

Your choice if they do a QUALITY job it may be worth it to you not to do it yourself.

I used to do ALL my own work on my vans now im older and its worth it to me. No your not being cheap...My rule now is "if it drips a drop its in the shop" cause I have to admit I cant do my own work anymore. Im gettin ready to spent 2K on changing a 454 head gasket .....2K to change out a $12 part... its ALL labor.

If it's a good shop; it's all about quality product and experienced workmanship. I would stay away from chain shops and go with a highly rated; long time family business.
