I went through the effort today to change the oil, and at the same time decided to check the differential. I think I got about 1/2 a quart out of the diff, which explains the whining. Saw nothing alarming in there so I refilled with some Royal Purple 75-90 syn and it no longer makes noise.

I also managed to roll my ankle that I previously tore a bunch of ligaments, so the festivities of the day ceased.

Picked up some goodies, a 1994 body manual and a 1993 factory service manual. My batteries have arrived for the house power stuff, and we have been working to get their build in BMS talking and functional. Still working out the inverter setup.

I did a diff service in an attempt to find the rear end noise. Fluid looked like someone has actually serviced it in the past and I didnt find anything alarming. Refilled with Royal Purple 75-90 syn. Still some noise, but I'm not going to worry about it at this point.

What product did you use on the walls at 1.5" thick, was it the carpet padding?

I did 3 layers of 15/32" carpet padding. Spray adhesive to the walls, and itself. Easy enough to remove if I have to do so. Took some and rolled it up to put between the bracing for the interior panels and the outer wall. It has absolutely zero tinny sound anymore, apart fromt the front doors which I did not do since the the padding would hold water and I these old doors are anything but water tight. I will likely put some sort of dynamat stuff in them just to get rid of the hollow sound when closing.

As for the effectiveness, I went camping last weekend at an event with my van parked on a dirt/gravel path. With the windows shut, I could not hear any of the people walking by which you normally could.

Onto other events... A friend was at a beetle swapmeet and got this flate for me. Vintage too.

I also finally got the rest of the lettering off the van meaning that it has improved the look drastically. I ended up using oven cleaner and a razor blade to do the last bit as I was growing weary of it. I spread it on and tried to keep it mostly confined to the letters, and it took about 15-20 minutes to do its thing on the thickest bits. Still an absolute PITA in parts as some letters, for no discernable reason, were entirely unaffected by it.

I did finish it off by using a radial buffer and swirl remover to bring some of the metalic back to the paint as it was very dull over the entire body.
Speaking of the prior beetle, you can see it in the reflection. '66 or '67 I think.

( That bug in the reflection of your van looks pretty sweet. My one and only bug was a sweet 1967 that I flipped real quick )
