Hey y’all I’ve got a 1979 chevy g20 with the 350/350 engine tranny combo with a little over 100k on it. Unknowingly ran it out of coolant and overheated it over and over again :/. (Coolant temp gauge read nothing over operating temp while this was happening…..). Now almost all gaskets leak. Puddles of oil everywhere I go, it burns oil and roals the blue coal. And some valve train problems. So. I’m looking into repowering my old van and would love engine and tranny recommendations! Do I go crate 350 and use all my old parts or go fuel injection with a 5.3 or something similar? Also going 4x4 in the future and any ideas relating to that would be very helpful. What have yall done or what would be your perfect setup?

I strongly second the SwimShop 4x4 Boys. They put the Drive in four wheel drive.
Why I traded away Dogvan for the one ton G30 5.7 350/4L80E.. Plus, it runs! lol

An ATK sourced 350 will bolt right in. Stay with a decent carb. The GM 4x Kit from Swimshop also bolts right in. Some welding required. Run a nice dual exhaust.

The 5.3 does get you the 4L60E 4 speed OD, but you have to have the computer to run it. GM throttle body EFI is way better than Dodge. Chevy TPI is even better, like on a '97 Chevy 5.7/350, but again any modern swap with EFI /OD trans will require the matching computer to run it. TBH, the 5.7 in my GMC Sierra, still a generic 350 Chevy.

If money is no object that changes things, but with a 1979, I'd be happy with a generic decent 350.

The early 5.3's are a nice smooth modern 327, but the 350/T350 is the easiest way to go. Now If you can score a T400 with the transfer case adapter or T-case... laugh
G'day! Van On MasonM!

I strongly second the 4L80E !!! I just couldn't bring myself to tear up BBC Blue. Couldn't do it!
The engine cradle Justin designed @ SS4x He designed for the GM smallblock.
Not to say a 454, even an 8.1 or a straight 6 is notdoubt doable, but I decided to stick with the SBC for any 4x build in the future. My neighbor is a Welder, Mechanic by trade. Erected a gantry in his driveway. laugh That's not even legal in California!!! lol
He's done 2 diesel engine R&R, welding on all kinda stuff all day long. Hard worker.
Making 4x plans & saving money!!! G'day!!

This is all frscke1's doing.. cheers bow

Good Wrenching MasonM!!!

I have a friend that is a big block fanatic, only problem he puts a 440 in everything, he runs a fox body with a 440, a late 90's Dodge ram with a 440.. Big Blocks do get the party started and your point across.

Too funny, The elusive 440! Only ever saw one in a B van, and not in person. The kid I traded Dogvan to up in Amarillo yesterday, his neighbor has a Dodge TransVan right next door. I'd found another one in Albuquerque. Both the right 2 only years. The one in Albq, I could not even believe how clean and complete it was. But.

Came close to buying one, with the 400. VIN's matter!!
