Had a few Chevy I-6's, a 235/PG, in the '59 2-door Impala. Yeah, I know, right?

Gearhead racer BIL and I, we put a 250/glide in the $250 '65 Impala. Yeah that one too. Can't keep them all... Funny, to replace the fried 283, Had to chain down the motor on the high side, laugh Chevy kept sending the same side (2 low same side lower motor mount.) That was funny, went back so many times, I scored a Kawasaki 100 out of the Impound yard there at Quality Chevrolet, for $12. cheers

The 283? How hot was it? "Yeah Bill, the rings came out in pieces.." lol
The 250 came out of a low mile '66 Malibu convertible. Yellow, black top. Was a very nice car, BDU. Before Drunk Uncle... cry

The 283 went on to compete in Econorail at Carlsbad Raceway. (where you choice of stock transmissions, were the Powerglide, or the 3-speed.. lol shift

What does "blown" mean? Rod knock? Seized? Low oil pressure with no bad noise? Spun cam or crank bearing? Could be you might be able to roll in a new set of crank and rod bearings with the engine in the van and be back on the road. How much diagnosing was done and did they tell you what they found? How mechanically inclined are you? I was able to pull the oil pan and replace the oil pump in a 1979 B250 once owned. It had a 360 and true dual exhaust, so it was a bit easier to remove the oil pan, but it can still be done if you are sneaky.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!
