145 amp AD244 alternator wired up and charging great. Settled down around 14 volts at the battery post.

Engine seems to have evened out some after the running valve lash adjustment too.

Old 350 wants to run

Wow. Just wow. Super nice 350 indeed. Sounded really nice. Thanks for all the post, the Shorts are great!
Pretty smooth SBC. Really clean build and attention to detail. Convo's R cool. G-Van Chevy school is IN !!
that is a sweet alternator setup. Great work Sir.

PS,
Not a stretch to say you are probably one of the best mechanics I've ever kinda met G-Van Man

I'm old, so lucky to have had a 283, a 327, and a '97 350 SBC, lotta SBC BBC work trucks, lucky to have had something to compare your baddass 350 to. Awesome SBC.

I learned too late about cutting the top off of a set of stock SBC valve covers, for running adjustment of the valves. laugh lol

Forgot to throw these on here too. Plugs are still a bit sooty from the rings not yet fully sealing, but some more miles should help resolve that. It took my 97s 383 about 2,000+ miles before the rings really seated and some extended WOT runs to really build some cylinder preasure and heat to help them seat. I find it odd that there is some oil burning, yet no smoke at all and the PCV system is pulling good vacuum in the crankcase if I block off the vent. The EFI system has seemed to have learned quite well too. I ended up re-checking the timing when I had the belt off changing the alternator and the a/c bracket pulled forward to remove the driverside valve cover. Had to unbolt the fan shroud and push it back to get a line of sight on the timing marks. It was running about 4-6* retarded from where it needed to be. Seems a lot happier now. Idle is more stable and the throttle response greatly improved.

Screenshot from the Proflow 4 system during warmup after adjusting the timing. The ECU is re-learning the fueling after the timing adjustment. The engine is now making almost a full inch hg more vacuum at idle after the timing and valve adjustments. Pulling nearly 20 in/hg at hot idle at 650 rpm. It will idle smooth down to 500 rpm, but seems happiest around 650 rpm and that also feels better with the in-gear idle crawling pace. Let off the brake and it has that nice forward crawl without feeling like it is tugging against the brakes or having to give it throttle to crawl along.

One other thing I have noticed. The PF4 system has basically stock type GM air/fuel ratio swings around stoichiometric. That should help the catalytic converters do their job well once the full exhaust system is in place. The rich/lean swings are needed for the catalytic converter to work efficiently. Just because I doubled the HP of the stock engine does not mean it has to have dirty exhaust or lousy fuel mileage when cruising along. By keeping the emissions clean, probably as some newer cars being made, I feel it only supports the notion that older vehicles can be kept clean burning machines. The Vortec heads help extract as much burn as possible from the fuel injected by the far more accurate sequential injection with wideband feedback that the PF4 offers.

I found a NOS, discontinued Spectre air cleaner housing I had been trying to locate. $250 when Spectre last offered it for $150 on Ebay and it comes with the re-useable 14x4 air cleaner. Seller still has 8 showing available at this time, just FYI. I found some large scoops listed for saw dust collection, that I plan to fit into the front core support on each side of the condenser. Also found some 4 layer, insulated flexible 4" duct that looks like the single layer plastic intake tubes GM used on the 70s and 80s vehicles externally. Thus it is getting a dual 4" cool ram air intake system. Should help out the intake air temps a lot on a hot summer day preventing hp loss.

My plan is to tape off the lid and paint the sides and bottom with universal semi gloss black engine paint, leaving only the lid shiny like the old LT1 or Z/28 350s.
