So I have a 92 Chevy g20 StarCraft conversion. Pretty cool van unfortunately the top had been leaking and plenty of rusty parts being near the Gulf of Mexico. Been doing basic maintenance and replacing suspension parts. The rear end is the 8.5 10 bolt 30 spline shafts. Was doing the wheel end bearings and one of the axle shafts is pitted. I would rather not drop $150 for a new axle. Plenty of complete rear ends for sale around me but have no way to haul them as the van is up on blocks right now. There’s a pull a part yard that has a 1996 g10 but has no info on the rear end. I’ve tried searching to see what options came in a 96 g10 but can’t find what I need. Does anyone know if it is also a 8.5 10 bolt with 30 spline 5x5 lug shafts? If so is it the same length, roughly 33.34 inches?

Thank you

Hey Will,

Just guessing, but I'd think any 5 lug C truck or G van GM vehicle with an identical rear track measurement, with a 10 bolt, 5x5 lug, 1/2 ton 3/4 ton semi floating rear axle, 80's to '96 may be the same.
IDK about later than '96, '96 model year was GMC Savanah, Chevy Express vans, on the OBS GMT truck platform, but Chevy is a good make for interchangeability between models and GM makes with drivetrain. Good Will Hunting !! cheers

Look up your replacement axle on Dorman ... https://www.dormanproducts.com/
Then look up the donor vans axle and see if the numbers match...

I should add a disclaimer. I like working on my rides. But I am not a mechanic. There are Home Depot parts on my vehicles. Some people find that alarming. Not me.

My Ex said once, "You love your cars more than me." Not true, but they don't ever argue, or talk back. Or cheat. A lot to be said for that. You can turn them off. You can also sell them. To the Junkyard and have them crushed even! lol But that hardly ever happens... laugh

Any mechanical advice from me should be taken with a grain of salt, And only if you are super desperate. grin

They had 2 vans. Both had worse conditions shafts than mine. I checked other trucks/suburbans from the same era but those shafts were not long enough. Seems to be roughly 2 inches in length difference. Did find some other parts for the van and also a fresh Jeep XJ that I needed interior for so not a complete waste. I’ll just buy a new shaft.

I’m the same way. I try to repair and rig what I can. That’s why I’m searching for a used axle shaft before biting the bullet and getting a new one.
