I have plans to take my dash off later this year to replace the heater core so I guess I'll figure it out then, but in the meantime I'm curious.

When I move the hot/cold lever from side to side there's a surprising amount of resistance and I can hear something moving around in the passenger footwell. I'm assuming there's a mechanical linkage to some sort of baffle that allows air in from the heater core.

Any tips for smoothing out this linkage so I don't feel like I'm about to snap off the little lever any time I move it?

Edit: Forgot to mention, this is an 88 Chevy G20

Don’t know what you’re working on but probably cable to a lever/door on your plenum. Check for obvious bends/ l routing problems. Maybe some lube, could also be restrictions or damage in the plenum.

All Sam said, Yes indeed. like control cables on a boat. Blend door could be stuck/sticking. Had the linkage fail while underway on a 97 GMC Sierra 1500. POP!!

I agree with all the above replies. When you start taking everything apart on the passenger side to get at the heater core, take your time and check the operation of everything before you loosen it, see if anything is bent or already loose, lube all the pivot points….don’t be in a hurry, you just want to do this once, replacing the heater core is a pain in the butt. Good luck.

Recently purchased (10-2021) a 1991 Chevy G-20 “Shorty”. Past vans are a 1976 Chevy G-10 (purchased new in 1976 & sold in 1995). A 1978 Chevy G-20 Shorty purchased in 2010 and sold in 2015.
