Been working on the 91 Shorty for 17 months now…..just got the bumpers back on today. Ordered a new license plate lamp assembly last year and finally dug it out and opened the box….to my question….is there supposed to be some sort of gasket for it? The original one was still on the original license plate bracket when I removed the bumper and it was all rusted but cannot remember if there was a gasket on it……CRS…..LOL

Thanks

Recently purchased (10-2021) a 1991 Chevy G-20 “Shorty”. Past vans are a 1976 Chevy G-10 (purchased new in 1976 & sold in 1995). A 1978 Chevy G-20 Shorty purchased in 2010 and sold in 2015.

Does the lamp need metal to metal contact for ground? If it does would you be better off running a ground wire instead and cutting an EPDM gasket? is it possible the exposed metal was the beginning of the corrosion in the first place?

Yes the lamp uses the chassis ground…single wire feed. Not concerned to much will not be driving the van in the rain but might get caught in small rain at a show or cruise night…was just wondering if the assembly came from the factory with some sort of gasket for at least the lense cap anyway…..just trying to cover all my tracks….one less thing to worry about….

I fixed one once with a plastic amber marker light. Painted the back of the lens white so the light only aimed at the plate. No gasket. If the light unit itself is sealed it probably doesn't matter.
