Time for some tires on my 93 G20 4.3 /4L60E. Stock size is 225/75R15, and alternative size is 235/75R15. Lots more options in the larger size, but should I be worried about putting extra undue strain on my transmission with the increase in width and diameter (0.6"). In addition, would all terrain tread lessen or worsen the strain?

Doesn't seem like a real significant increase, but I want to treat my 4L60E as nicely as possible... ; )

The LE trannys are bullet proof Id be more worried with your 4.3 motor ... I went up 2 sizes in tires to mellow my 454 and the tranny doesnt mind at all ... no replacement for displacement ...

Thanks frscke1! The ole 4.3... yet another thing I haven't considered... what about a 235/70R15? Little wider than stock, and just a touch less diameter. Still a risky move?

Welcome!

That's a stock tire size in a 78. I run them on My 33 year old Dodge B250 with a 175 hp 5.2, and an A500 OD auto, with 145,000 miles on that drivetrain.

I trashed a ujoint 2 winters ago having way too much fun in the snow, so I wouldn't worry too awful much about that drivetrain... lol

I run 235/75R15 on my 94 with a 4.3 and it seems to be fine; they're pretty aggressive tread, Coopers, but they look good. No signs of strain.

The 4L60E even came in one-ton 5.7 vans, I had one, did some towing with it, never had any issues. I would imagine if I beat on it constantly I might have worn it out.

The 4.3 I find is fine on mostly flat roads but hates hills. For a while the junkyard had a 1-ton cube cutaway van out there and I was shocked to see the six in that. I pull a small trailer sometimes with mine (to the swap meets) and while it will pull it I plan extra time so I don't have to hammer on it. I don't think the six has enough torque to upset the trans.

Speedo does read about 3 MPH fast with these tires.
