Hey Everyone! I decided to start a readers rides thread to document some of the progress on the van. A lot of this may be in no particular order since I have been working on this project for over 10 years and a lot of the work was DONE out of order haha!

This project started with a trip to the "Cruisin" car show in Ocean City MD where I saw an Early Ford Econoline pickup on a Bronco chassis with really big tires. It was flat black with moon disc hubcaps and really had "the look". I spoke to the owner for awhile and he gave me a few insights into the body-on-chassis swap. I decided to go this route and sell off the cars I'd accumulated for the project so far. (started with a '74 VW bus and an '88 Blazer... See? Out of Order!)

There was no title for the Blazer or the bus either so the plan was to start over. A guy at work ended up selling me a '87 K-10 pickup for $800 which I was able to drive home and drive around a bit before taking it apart. (Seen the prices of square body chevy's now?? I should have just kept it and fixed it up hahah)

The K-10 was stripped to the frame (cab, bed, fenders, etc.. were given to another guy locally who was restoring one) and the van was found on Ebay out of North Carolina I think. The seller of the van was headed to MD anyway so he delivered it in exchange for the brand new rally wheels and BFG's it had on it and I also gave him the VW bus as a donation to the charity he was working for.

The van rolled but didn't run and condition of pretty much everything was unknown. It had spent many years in a barn. My dad and I got the engine running before giving it away to someone who used it in a boat maybe? (memory is a little fuzzy now..) the rest of the van running gear came out too and was offered up to anyone who could use it.

A friend from work recommended a guy who builds rock crawling buggies to do the fabrication work joining the body and chassis. I got it back looking like this:

Right now it looks much the same from the outside, but the inside is coming along. I need a new dipstick tube, exterior mirrors, electric fan to be secured, and a few others odds and ends before going for the maiden voyage on a public road. I've driven around the yard a few times but that's just not the same.

I'll post updates here as I go through the pictures and remember the stories that go with them. If anyone has questions feel free to ask. My background includes time spent as a mechanic on boats and cars, and I ran a small service department for awhile also acting as a State Inspector so I know my way around vehicles. this is the first one I have built basically from the ground up though, so there was a lot to learn and keep learning. Tons of awesome info here and thanks to everyone who provides it!

Hey Wedgy - you're right that '66 was the last year for the flat glass. This one has the curved Windsheild and the headlights are set a little lower on the fascia. Thought if I was going up in the air it would be better to have the lower headlights plus I liked the look of the 2nd gen a little better.

"Doc" had me scratching my head at first but I guess "MD" VAN MAN was the reason. I assure you I'm far from a doctor, just a guy who lives in Maryland haha!

Went for another ride around the yard on Saturday and man do the brakes on this thing SUCK! This is after I went through all 4 wheels and cleaned everything up from sitting. The pads and shoes were brand new about 10 years ago and they still looked the same but they had a thick layer of spider webs haha! I painted the calipers and the centers of the front rotors being careful not to get any overspray on the friction surface. Friction surfaces were cleaned up with a DA sander and they look pretty good. (It's a pain in the butt to change the rotors on a 4x4 front axle so I'm going with what I got until they need to be changed. Adjusted the rear shoes and got a little improvement but I have my foot basically on the floor standing on the pedal just to keep from rolling down a hill in the back yard.

Got on the google machine and learned that the master cylinder I *thought* would increase stopping power actually reduced it. Bigger MC bore = less line pressure. Also learned about what GM called "low drag" calipers. These apparently have a different seal design which pulls the piston back ever so slightly and is supposed to keep the pads from resting on the rotor while the brakes are not engaged to save gas. This is why GM master cylinders from the 80's and 90's have the "stepped bore" so the first little bit of pedal travel pushes a big volume of fluid to the fronts to push the pistons back out then the smaller, higher pressure portion of the bore takes over to provide the stopping force. I looked up the MC that the donor truck would have had and sure enough, it's a 1-1/4" x 1" stepped bore. The one for the same year S-10 has a 1-1/4" x 15/16" which will give extra line pressure in the 15/16" portion. I am planning to swap out the '67 chevy 1-1/8" bore standard MC with the S-10 unit for the low-drag caliper compatibility plus extra stopping force. Depending on how well that goes, I may or may not need to add a remote vacuum booster behind the grill or behind the seat.

We all love pictures, so i took an "after" of the front brakes all cleaned up. Last post I got an image uploaded to "ImgBB" but this time I couldn't get it to work. What's the best way to host an image? (for free haha).

Also installed some new mirror heads on my "west coast" style hoops that are on each door. they look good but there's no ball stud for adjustment. (My fault, ordered without reading all the specs...) so another pair of 5" round convex peep mirrors will go below them and act as the primary mirror. Should look pretty good.

More pics to follow when I get a reliable system in place for hosting.
