Well for along time (in Michigan anyway) if interested in getting any plastic exterior auto/truck parts chromed it has not been available for a very long time...EPA rules and whatever else.... Well late last year I have been getting close with the 91 Chevy "shorty" project that I decided I would look into the new type of chrome painting available now that I have been hearing and reading about for my new stock headlight bezels. Found out there are basically two "systems" out there being marketed to paint & body shops, etc.... One is Cosmichrome (will not mention the other because the three places I talked to trying to use it have had poor results at best...). So I checked out the web site of the one in Michigan (Insane Paint Shop) that is using the Cosmichrome System, talked with the owner about how the system worked and results and decided to try it out. I am very pleased with the results.. Basically they strip the parts first, then apply the chroming process, then it is cleared and then a ceramic coating is applied .It is as durable and exterior auto paint. Now there are a few "DIY" chrome painting products out there and the couple I have seen again the results were fair to poor at best but that as usual depends on ones expectations.... So if you might be interested in getting having a plastic exterior car/truck part chrome I suggest this is best available right now anyway.......See the photos below.

Recently purchased (10-2021) a 1991 Chevy G-20 “Shorty”. Past vans are a 1976 Chevy G-10 (purchased new in 1976 & sold in 1995). A 1978 Chevy G-20 Shorty purchased in 2010 and sold in 2015.
Chrome plating, Powdercoating, IDK hardly anything about, but the OP, HD, is right on about the environmental laws, especially in California.
Lost my favorite paint and body shop in town to the air quality laws in California. He sold off, liquidated all, moved to Arizona to sell automotive paint.
I think Chrome Plating is done with electricity, as in Electroplating?
Pretty shiny though. Looks great! Nice job HD!

There are no chrome shops in Ireland anymore? How about in England? They are close enough maybe?

There are a few places left in the UK but since brexit import duty applies and the prices of getting the chrome plating done and the shipping and taxes is more than buying a new part.
I understand but in some cases new parts are not an option…..
