Yep, had to remove the clip because the parts had broken and a couple pieces were inside….got all those out…..weird that the clip (with the square piece attached to it) will not slide on all the way……will give it another “go” tomorrow…..maybe try and spread the clip apart a little bit……Maybe try with the square piece not attached…..ahhh…the joy’s of owning an older classic….LOL

I had to fix mine (exact same as your pics this summer on my 92 Chevy) Now, I wish I would have taken pics to show you, but I didn't. Sorry.

First off, you will want to take a coat hangar or wire and cut it about 2' long.
The metal clip that gets installed above the steer column (look for the dust marks so you can put the new one in just the same location) That part is simple (makes a difference, you may want to look hard for the dust marks or wear marks so you can get it in the same place.

Once that part is installed, you will want to take a very small screw driver and pry open the clip you just installed (this will make the next step go easier) Leave screw driver prying open and go onto next step.

Now, take the plastic sleeve that will hold the indicator lever and use your wire and put a 90 bend at the end of the wire with about a 3/4" return so you can feed the part into the column. Use a small long nose needle pliers and line up (once you have the wire and sleeve fed into place), once lined up, pull the wire and pry open more on the metal clip to allow the sleeve part to clip onto it (this may sound hard, but really isn't with the right tools. Takes time and patience)

Note the bend part of the wire with sleeve will go into the column so you can use the bend to pull the sleeve onto the clip
Note, the reason why the wire, is 2 part. #1 the sleeve must be inserted on it's side to fit (without taking the column apart) then using the wire to pull the sleeve forward and move into place?

I hope this isn't to confusing. Worked for me!

I will dig for pics, but I got a new phone and no pics transferred over....

Bob

Going to try doing this install..one question...the black square sleeve....the small "section" on top that sticks up is not centered (see photo) so which way does it go in? Is the 'section" on top more towards the front or the rear?

thanks

Hi, first I want to thank you for the reply you sent to my posting about How to replace the gear shift indicator on my 91. I do have a couple question s though....
I tried following your steps today and got to the 1st part about prying open the "clip" that slides over the opening where the "sleeve" fits into...when the "clip" is installed onto the top of the opening I do not see where or how you pry it open more......where do you slip the small screw driver in at? Cannot be between the top of the clip and the top of the opening! Seems like it has to be pried open from the inside or the lower part of the clip that is now sitting along the upper section of the top of the sleeve opening needs to be opened more in a downward direction to be open enough for the sleeve to slide into it...does this make sense?
Sorry for all the questions but really cannot see how to do it...guess need more detailed instructions.

thanks
