Ok, so I can't find the answer to the question I'm asking (which means I am not asking the right question), and the brain trusts on Facebook answer 100 different questions other than what I asked. So here goes:

I am going to repair some old bubble windows I have and what holds the bubble lens into the frame? The aluminum frames look to have a double sided glazing strip that is water proof. I tried to use silicone with my sunroof and just made a huge mess instead. CR Laurence sells a waterproof double stick glazing strip that compresses to 1/16th of an inch, but I wanted to make sure this would be the correct use.

I do not mean the sealant around the aluminum frame to the sheet metal of the van. I know that is butyl.

Thank you,

Charlie

I've seen special rubber strips advertised for motorhome window repair.

Sorry, I didn't realize there was more than one reply in here. I haven't checked in awhile.

OKAY!

It isn't just one full answer, there are several solutions here depending on your application. For a Martin sunroof I restored, I had to use clear silicone around the frame, fit the glass in, and then clamp into place for 24 hours. This allowed enough clearance all the way around for the edge for the glazing to fit.

Next up, I had a set of diamond ports that actually had a U channel type trim as the frames came apart and when assembled, allowed the correct pressure to make them water tight. The closest channel I could find is this available through Primeline:

Please make sure your measurements are close as there are sever sizes.

Next up, I am also restoring a real bad set of the female sex emblems. These are different as they weren't glued in nor were they with a U channel. It appears the lenses were placed in the frames with a strip of 1/8" thick setting tape. It was enough to hold the frames to the lens and together. Next, the frames were just spot welded for assembly. To fill in the outside gap and waterproof are a similar edge glazing in size to this, but no longer available. I am waiting for the universal one to show up in the mail.

Available from CR Laurence.

So, a quick update on those universal seals from CRL. They are very small. They will not fit. I am waiting to hear back from someone about a strip of rubber they use. I might just need to make the trek to a dedicated glass shop. Most everyone blew me off the first time calling it automotive and not wanting to touch it despite it being a universal glazing.
