My Installer pulled only one number off the block : driver side where my tranny meets the block.
The number he pulled from that location is : 3970010
I always thought the block number would be part of the vin. It's not.
I'm having him pull a number from the front of the block passenger side.
I appreciate all and any advice & experience.
Thanks Mickey

The engine number will be stamped, usually on the front left side of the block, on the deck surface next to the head. A matching number will be the same year as the vehicle and come from the correct engine plant. Different engine plants supplied different assembly plants sometimes. Some of the Chevy guru websites may be able to decode the number for you. Details like that on the older vehicles is getting harder to find even with the internet.

If stamped in '74 partial vin on pad above oil filter.(sequence# of vin). Look for Julian date on the block. Should be top back maybe pass side. Remember the date should be older than the van, you need the part to build it. There is a pad below the alternator pass side deck, 3 digits. You can look up the code and see years, what vehicle. You take all 3 and decide from there. Other things to think about dipstick(what side?), oil ports, 1-2 piece seal. It all paints a picture. | | | Re: Matching Numbers | Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 11,241 Likes: 411 Post Junkie | OP Post Junkie Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 11,241 Likes: 411 | I' m so STOKED right now: my installer sent me two sets of numbers and the 1st set matches the last six of my vin; it looks like the motor is original. The van Gods shined upon me ! It was meant to be jcd74 = Brother. I will definitely pass it on to my engine builder. I'm out of my mind right now. Appreciate your input.
