I assume you're talking about idle problems. Having a Q-jet means it will idle a little different from time to time depending on the temp and humidity. I've always been a Q-jet fan but they are temp sensitive at idle. Does the '84 model have the "hot idle" compensation? Doesn't actually matter because that didn't really work very well. Whatever you swap for add a thicker insulating type gasket. The stock intake's will heat the carbs up and cause rough/rich idle. The Q-jets when hot, will evaporate more fuel in the bowl and cause mixture troubles. They are also very touchy about manifold vacuum which means they are affected by ignition timing changes. If the timing "walks" around even a couple of degrees the vacuum will walk about as well. A worn camshaft can cause idle vacuum troubles too. Sorry I don't have a recommendation on a different carb. Q-jets, Solex and SU carbs are about all I ever worked on. Back in the day, give me a Solex on a 1.9 Opel GT or a pair of SU's on an MGB and I'd have 'em purring like a kitty kat..... | | | Re: Recommend me an aftermarket carb 1985 305 | Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 4,805 Likes: 123 Uncle Rust N Dents | Uncle Rust N Dents Joined: Jul 2014 Posts: 4,805 Likes: 123 | I agree on that single barrel Rochester. My '66 C10 had one of those, and that was the first carb I ever rebuilt. I've only done about 9 or 10, though, so I'm definitely not an expert.
I do know that I had issues with accelerator pump diaphragms on a Motorcraft 2100 due to ethanol. It stiffened the stock ones up really quickly, so I had to get an aftermarket one. Don't know why that was the only carb of mine that had that problem. | | | Re: Recommend me an aftermarket carb 1985 305 | Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 249 Likes: 59 G Van Man | G Van Man Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 249 Likes: 59 | You won't find a better carb than a Q-Jet. Personally I would use a 78-84 model without the dual capacity accelerator pump or mixture control solenoid. 17083226 or 17084226 or the like. Those have the larger primaries and flow up to 850 cfm. Get one built and recalibrated by Cliff Ruggles or Sean Murphy Inductions and it will last for a long time.
Option 2 would be a Sniper TBI system. Throw on a used 7101 performer rpm manifold at the same time so that you get the correct square Holley flange without using a flow reducing adapter.

I'm going to pull the q-jet one more time and really go through everything one last time. I took the van out for one last little cruise before putting it away for the winter and it ran perfectly. I don't know if it's the cold weather or what, but there was no bog, no idle issues, nothing that I had been experiencing. I guess I'll just go through it again and be super thorough. Also going to be checking the timing and a number of other things.
I appreciate the input and I'm still interested in more discussion! | | | Re: Recommend me an aftermarket carb 1985 305 | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 936 Likes: 36 old hand | old hand Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 936 Likes: 36 | Might be a bit more then you want to spend but the new carb type looking EFI systems out there work really well. Everyone I have talked to to that have gone that route just cannot say enough good things about them. All the "hot rod" shops in the Detroit metro area (SE Michigan) cannot install them fast enough.....assume it is the same everywhere else also......
Recently purchased (10-2021) a 1991 Chevy G-20 “Shorty”. Past vans are a 1976 Chevy G-10 (purchased new in 1976 & sold in 1995). A 1978 Chevy G-20 Shorty purchased in 2010 and sold in 2015.

IF it was in fact what they advertised ( a bolt on self learning efi system) maybe. First off my fuel milage went from 10-16mpg to 5! 5MPG! now the hole reason I bought this thing is because my van travels not to van shows (yet) but across the country oregon to texas, texas to vermont that sort of travel, you know the kind that is impossible at 5 mpg. Secondly Throttle response. oh yeah buddy it improved so much that at the smallest hint of the throttle blades cracking the van would lurch forward like a stepped on rattlesnake making driving in downtown traffic the most terrifying experience that my gbageirlfriend ever went through.....so i call holley irate and they said that for my application i needed a progressive throttle linkage $70. the send it i install turn the progressive throttle linkage on in settings great improvement drive it 40 miles and my screen looks like its CHP chasing a white ford bronco. red lights and sirens all over turns out me turning on the setting in the han held does nothing you have to tune for it...... but not just that you have to tune every thing on it. Thier software is non compatible with my computer (chromebook) and it is a very complicted system have the orginal wiring better get ready to replace EVerything wires fuse box altornator ground cables(buy extra what you have wont be enough) every thing Why? Because it interferes with the computor. im not sure how or why they have it marketed the way they do but its garbage. Im currentlly looking for a donor vehicle to ls swap the van because i feel it would be less of a hassle than chasing down the probablems with this system. dont belive me check out the sniper fourm on holleys fourm page. you will be hard pressed to find a good review | | |
