I'm wanting to up to 17's, run a 246 or 265 but what is the max size, do I need 40 or 50 series tires on 17" rims.

I would stick with 50 series

I went a different direction on my 89 E150 and put 31x10.5x15 BFG All Terrains on it . Day to day it does not rub, EXCEPT for in tight turns it does rub the sway bar, and on a HARD bump it hits the fender some.

The front of my little E150 sits low or I'd have put 31x10.50 all around it, my E350 has 245/75 16's on it, I've thought about upsizing it, but they are new, previous ones were coming apart, love load E tires, they fly apart long before wearing out.
