I'm getting coolant in my engine. There is no oil in mixing with the coolant in the radiator. So that would be the oil cooler? I read alot about deleting the oil cooler all together....I'm not so sure about. Maybe someone can give their opinion. Looks to me that getting a new cooler....requires a whole new radiator...am I correct in this?

How can I be sure its the head gasket? What im seeing is after changing my oil and putting the right amount in.....after driving for awhile, check the dipstick and it looks overfilled. The old oil was dark but didn't look like chocolate milk. Exhaust really isn't smoking. I do have a oil leak thats coming from somewhere around the cooler. At the moment it is a little hard to tell where because I'm also dealing with two other leaks. One being from my 4 month old master cylinder at the bottom the reservoir. And the other from the power steering. My van has only overheated twice. After the first time....it didn't do it again for two weeks. Van is my daily driver as well. So it seems that this is happening pretty slowly.. Also when I check the dipstick, the oil is unusually hot. I believe that's everything. Believe me ....head gasket was my first thought, but I've been through that before and the symptoms don't seem to be quite the same. Any advice at this moment is greatly appreciated. Seems like when it rains it pours...with problems .

My van runs and drives normally with only the occasional oil showing up in the coolant.
Every once in a while, it puffs white smoke out the tailpipe on startup.
No coolant in the oil.

I wanted to believe it was something simple for several years (mine's not a daily driver anymore), but after checking everything else, I finally broke down (pun intended) and bought a combustion gas tester.
It's a little tubular tool that you fill with blue fluid, then set it in your overflow bottle's filler opening while the vehicle is running.
If you are getting combustion gasses in your coolant, the blue fluid will turn yellow, indicating a blown head gasket.

Mine turned yellow.

I've used the same kit on three different vehicles so far.
Best $30 I've spent in quite a while.

I'm not getting any oil in the radiator. If I am....I would have to be a small amount. The coolant is normal in color. I had a bad head gasket in my truck a couple of years ago. It's a 77 f150. When that happened , I had oil and coolant mixed together in the engine and the radiator. Is it possible if oil is not coming into radiator but coolant is going into the engine, that its still the head gasket?

If your getting coolant in your engine but no oil in your rad its a head gasket and your blowing the coolant out the exhaust. Coolant in the cylinders but not in the crank case its a head gasket.

Yes.

A head gasket can fail and cause several different symptoms.
The symptoms depend on how, or more appropriately, where it failed.

It can fail between two cylinders... (causes low compression in cylinders)
between an oil passage and a cylinder... (causes oil burning (blue smoke from exhaust) and or high crankcase pressure)
between a coolant passage and a cylinder... (causes coolant burning (white steam from exhaust) and or exhaust bubbles in coolant)
between an oil passage and a coolant passage...(coolant in oil, or oil in coolant, or both)
from any of those to the outside of the engine... (coolant or oil leaks, or exhaust puffing out from under head)
or a combination of any of those.
