I have a 2005 GMC Safari. Im planning my interior. It has the rear factory bench seats, that clip in and out. So I'm thinking of making a removable interior to keep the vans multi purpose usability. The sketch is quick and not to scale, just a ruff idea that I'm thinking. With this design I could have the factory seating configuration, custom seating, and still have the van open to hual bigger items. The front piece would just slide into place useing hooks on the bottom and factory mount, kind of a friction fit useing the rear piece to hold it in place. The rear would use the factory locking system.

Has anyone seen something like this? It works for the factory seating. The only difference is the flooring would come out also. I would use a heavy vinyl/rubber mat as the flooring for the rear, for hauling or what ever. Basically from work van to limousine, lol.

That's a cool idea.

I've never seen it done, but I was thinking of some kind of reconfigurable interior for my van several years ago.
Ended up never doing anything but pulling the old stuff out.
Probably just get some beanbag chairs to throw in there.
lol

So did you post this just to share, or are you looking for additional ideas?

Alittle of both. Wondering if it has been done before. It seems pretty simple, factory seatbelts would still work. Maybe even switch out the seats for a bed, just have options. Versatility is the whole point of a van.

Looks cool. I haven't seen anything like it before. How are you planning to attach the inboard bucket seat mounts?

The rear section would be one piece seats, console, flooring all 1 unit. I would start with a factory rear bench seat. Trash the seat and mount bucket seats and console to that base. Keeping the factory locking system for those seats. Then make a small storage box that opened to the rear, hiding the factory seat base and giving access to the latches. A good solid subfloor, then the finish flooring. The middle section would use just hooks and be held in place between the front seats and the rear section. I would want to keep the latches hidden. If done right it should be almost impossible to tell that it comes out.

I could have show van interior on the weekends.
Cargo van for working and hauling.
Or still use both factory rear bench seats when hualing the kids.
3 different interior possibilities from the same van.
Dont have to worry about kids dirtying my nice seats or scratching my wood floor.

Sounds cool. I just put the rear bench back in my Astro tonight and that whooped my old butt, so hope you have some help to load and unload that sucker. I think it will look neat as heck though.

I have 2 removable captains chair bases, pretty heavy, I've tried selling them, shipping is limiting on them, they come from a conversion van, I'd use them but its just too much for me to remove/insert such a heavy seat, and they are not flush with the floor, so I can't just roll around over them in my wheelchair. Now if you went with a nice hardwood floor, you don't want to damage it, removal isn't optional, you'll want a soft rubber to cover it when wanting to load stuff over it.

I was planning on building the floor in 2 parts, but with Gordon I will have to make it in 3 sections. A lot more floor to cover. The rubber mat would be installed permanently, under the removable wood floor. The flooring would start with a plywood base, covered with wood flooring, and framed. Everything screwed and glued. Looking into the possibility of LED lighting rescinded in the wood. Each section would be wired and have to be plugged in. Just worried if I needed to replace any LED. I love the idea and the versatility. But I will also have to find a place to store the interior when not in use. 2 bench seats, 2 bucket seats, a bed, and the flooring itself. My mind works better than my hands, so we will see how it comes out. But any information would be greatly appreciated. My brain has no limits, sometimes I dream too big.
