Im coming from the FJ60 Landcruiser world. I know when the drip rails show signs like this on a cruiser its only leading to a major can-o-worms.
This is on a 1978 Dodge i was interested in.
What say the experts or anyone thats dealt with this on vans.

"The PO had the roof worked on and color matched primered."

I wanted to say that it depends on how much the van is and what you plan to do with it...
But then I saw that this was a van posted in our Classifieds section that's nearly $10,000.

I wouldn't even consider buying it at that price point.

On a $2,200 van?
Maybe.

That's pretty ugly. The walls structure is essentially a tray with an upturned lip, (the drip rail) with the roof sitting down in the bottom of the drip rail, with sealant poured over top of the seam. The perforations through the drip rail
weaken it's structure and point to hidden water infiltration issues...

The roof is held down in the drip rails by sealant, caulking, and several metal clips around the perimeter. When you see those holes through the bottom of the drip rails, that's structural, plus it's entirely likely that water has seeped underneath the cracked caulking back into the body cavity, where it's been eating away at the metal unchecked, since that area of the walls often isn't even painted..

Definitely not a $10k van to have that sort of visibly obvious damage....

When I got my 75 I didn’t notice any rust in those areas. My van had been off the road for many years with broken roof vent and sunroof. Water got in and rusted from inside out. Looks like the same with that van. I’d stay away. My van now is starting to look like those pics unfortunately for me

My roof rails looked fine but then I found a bunch of rot on the interior, but I think it is more so from the leaking roof vent than the roof rails. Unless I haven't uncovered the rot in the rail yet...
