Hello,

I had searched for this a while back before I attempting it but couldn't find any documentation. Anyways, it is possible to drop the motor and trans by dropping the subframe and lifting the body off. Pop the lower ball joints out, remove driveshaft, kickdown linkage and cross member, remove remove front discs, knock drag link loose and disconnect all other accessories.

I've attached some photos for reference, I've done it both ways now and this was by far and away quicker and easier but I had access to a lift. It only took around 6 hours to drop it out and another hour or so to bolt the subframe back up and button everything back together to roll out the door. It could have went quicker if I would have done it in my own shop and it wouldn't have been a half metric half SAE 1995 unit. I am sure a re-alignment would be required if you did this to your daily driver.

-For your health

Wow, That's some job you did there! Thanks for sharing your pictures! Were there any sort of damping pads between the subframe and the body, or was it metal to metal? Makes me wish for a lift... smile

No damping pads that I saw during the teardown. There is one self centering screw (they have a cone on the mounting side of the head) per side so keep track of where those are at but other than that nothing weird. Sorry to get back to you so late, I guess I don't get notifications through email.

Thanks SilverStubby! That self centering feature is great to know about; returning the front end to alignment had been a concern of mine.

Nice. I just changed out a motor in mine but went in/out through front passenger door.

Never done one that way, I didn't know there was enough room on the newer (B150 and B1500) vans to do it that way. Did you have to take the trans out first or can you leave it in?
