Decided to redo the window channel/weatherstripping.....windows were loose and rattling and the old stuff was dried out an brittle. What a pain in the ass. The driver's side must have gotten more sun because the strip in the wing/vent window more or less melted and fused in there, which required yanking the whole thing out so I could chisel the junk out. Of course the passenger side took 1/2 the time after learning what not to do. Ended up scratching the tint in the process and decided to yank that off too. I am one tan mofo.

I squirted a bit of WD-40 under the rock hard stuff when I removed it on my mid. It slid right out. It was a total pain. I am not looking forward to doing the same on the truck in the coming months.

Hindsight 20/20! Learned my lesson.

(Lesson: don't ever do this again if possible)

I've done both my 73 and 89, I skipped messing with the vent, ain't broke don't fix it, buy the tool for removing the squeegee, makes life easier, I hate easy so I took the screwdriver, is great for breaking things you want to save.

Work continues. New intake/head gaskets, tensioner, belts........replacing the harmonic balancer is up next and probably a carb rebuild too because the idle is inconsistent.

Somebody got new tires today, the ones on it were scary old and rotted. Like frscke1. yay

Well now that it's raining, my crusty pirate roof escape hatch is leaking (of course). So my plans to eventually rip up the red floor carpet were accelerated with a break in the weather today. Luckily it wasn't too much of a hassle even being half-sick recovering from a mild cold.

So interior guys - can I salvage the sub floor or am I looking at replacing it? It got wet. Once it dries out, can I treat it with something or basically salvage it some other way? (It was done right, I found the signature of whoever did the work on the back of the sink.) Or am I doomed to future mildew? The stuff on the walls is in good shape and didn't get wet. I think it'll stay......

It doesn’t look bad to me. How’s it smell? Any mildew?

Do it right or do it twice .... if the ply starts to stink in 6-8 mo from now (time to grow under your new carpet or the smell of a chemical you treated it with) do you really want to rip it all out again to do it again ?

Dont destroy it getting it out and while you have a template cut new ply ...you can even transfer the mount holes

Verdict is still kind of out on the subfloor situation. It's pretty much dried out and not smelling bad. Once I get some more time I think I'll take a peek underneath and see what kind of cool microbes are milling about down there.

Also coming closer to a plan of action for the roached out vent cover - I think I might get a piece of tinted plexi cut to size and reseal it myself. I don't think the seals on the frame/etc. are compromised.

The good news is that we got the engine work pretty much wrapped up - so far we redid the intake, head and timing cover gaskets, threw in a new coil, harm balancer pulley, idler pulley, belts, replaced some misc. parts made of unobtainium (thanks Charlie) and finally put on a new carb. The old reman carb was pretty busted, plus we lost a spring while trying to rebuild it. Decided to punt and throw the dice on a brand new clone from eBay for $68. Definitely made of the Chinesium, but it looked legit when we popped it open. And suprisingly it works great pretty much out of the box after a few tweaks. Lopey idle gone, runs smooth as butter and is quiet. My mechanic partner still can't believe we were able to buy a new Carter YF clone for $68, and it made a night & day difference. This thing should pass smog with flying colors now, right?

The bad news is good ol' CA smog testing rolleyes I had a pre-test done and passed the emissions, no problem-o yay But the station failed me on the timing - gimme a f'n break! They couldn't tell me how much I was off when I asked, I even asked the tech a few questions about how/where he looked, what timing mark he was using, maybe he could show me, just to make sure we were all on the same page, etc. and all I got was an ass-load of attitude in return, and then the guy tells me he would fail me if I decided to test with them again. What a bunch of f'n tools. I was referred to these guys too......I guess service is still dead and has now become a beligerent zombie.

That van is nice! I think the '75 to '78 was the most handsome grille.

You know, the more I think about this the more mad I get. I would report them to the bureau of automotive repair. It is BS you passed a pre smog test and then they failed you, but can't tell you why other than the timing. That is BS.

On the subfloor, I learned while doing our house renovation last year, all wood can have very small amounts of mold present. Yes, even the brand new stuff you buy at the home store.

To kill any mold or mildew that may be growing mix a small amount of bleach into some water in a spray bottle. Spray the wood down, no need to soak it, just a good light coat.

Let the wood dry thoroughly, I usually wait at least 48 hours to make sure it's nice and dry. Then you can use Killz stain blocking paint to "lock in the funk", sort of like encapsulating paint on steel that prevents rust. The Killz will provide a barrier to keep mold from forming.

We had a spot in the laundry room that we removed some moldy rotten drywall and baseboard trim. The subfloor had a bit of water damage too, but no major mold or rot. Had another spot in the smaller bathroom that was the same. We treated both spots the same way I described above.

They have now been in use for a little over 1 year and we have had zero problems. I even peeled back a tiny bit of the vinyl tile in the laundry room while I was in there cleaning out the dryer vent about a month ago, just for curiosity sake, and it still looks great.

Hope this helps.

YES. As kursed said, there is always some amount of spores present in plywood products, but once exposed to moisture, they can blossom and re-produce. This is the cause of the huge household mold problem. I would treat and seal both sides and all the edges. Your van isn't kept in a climate-controlled space , so full treatment is necessary. ( I was a GC for 35 years).

I second on Killz. I manage an apartment complex and that stuff is great. They even make one for sealing concrete subfloors against animal urine and it works miracles.

I would personally. It might be a bit of a pain, but worth a little extra time just to be certain.

The original owner (who built it out in '78) got all the details right with the whole van, so the subfloor was not half-assed. I just need to find all the spots where he put filler in on top of the screws. The affected area is mostly on one side which is it's own separate sheet, so fingers crossed that it'll be easy greasy.

In other news, I got a custom piece of tinted polycarbonate cut to replace the old one. I didn't really have to, but I used sealing washers and put waterproof expanding weather stripping between the frame and plastic to hedge my bets, in addition to the outer ring where the seal actually happens. It was a little fiddly getting the right hardware to replace the old busted stuff, I had to rip out the hinge brackets and re-installed them using bigger pop rivets than what they orignially used. Just in time for the rain coming in tonight....

It looks like the new sunroof is a success, but I may redo the weatherstripping/foam at some point. It kind of looks sloppy from certain angles right now but it's doing the job.

Today was KILZ day. After ThanksTurduckin I will probably start on putting in the fancy floor. I think Charlie will be in my hood soon and we're gonna hang out at the PnP for some hijinks.

Floor day - got most of the planks in but ran out of daylight. The van has some nice tie down brackets installed by somebody, they needed a little finesse, and I'll need to figure out some kind of threshold/cap for the front and rear. Probably just buy something off the shelf from the hardware store. Debating whether or not to even put the sink back in at all.

All done on the main floor. There's a gap of bare metal between it and the vinyl stuff that is under the front seats/footwells. I may replace that stuff or maybe stick a strip of something to cover the bare metal. What to do....

Finally got to fixing the newly installed, newly blown intake gasket. Turns out the manifold was warped (common). Went with a new manifold, new studs and a badass Remflex gasket. Best it's ever run since buying it, and definitely more grunt. So freakin' glad we got it done.

Haven't updated in a while. Been mostly driving the snot out of it, everything is still bueno. Finally found the seats I wanted and had them redone. It's funny how much lower I sat in the old buckets.

Found some swivel bases, and this time I used my brain (and a tip from Charlie) to make sure they would fit. Sometimes being a snake-handler gets in the way. Anyway, I thought this van would have been totally stripped because stuff in the San Jose P n' P usually goes fast. It was probably all the rat turds inside that kept folks away, I hope I don't have the Hantavirus.

Simple Green'd them and shot the rust on the bottoms with some Krylon, ran out of paint so I used some plasti-dip on the rest, which turned out fine. No need for the brackets anymore....

Also got the shocks replaced last week.....Napa Gas Grande's, ooooh they're so fancy.

Been a while....I've been spending more time with family, music making and motorcycles....still take the van out every week or so to keep her motile. We had a lot of rain this winter and the paint has degraded muy rápido. Rust forming on the chrome. Need to slap some navy jelly on it, and talk to a paint guy, I think this summer might be the time to get it done.
