You and I have already been through this together so I am going to answer about what I did for re-potting ours.
We filled them with Hi-temp RTV. We didn't bother to dig out anything that was still in them for fear of damaging the circuit boards. Instead, since they were working just fine we loaded them with red RTV and no more drip drip drip. Worked like a charm! | | | Re: Dodge EGR timers info | Joined: Jan 2021 Posts: 111 Likes: 1 member | member Joined: Jan 2021 Posts: 111 Likes: 1 | i have a question about these, i have a 1979 b200 dodge rv van and i am running an edelbrock 650cfm 4 barrel carb how often do the 4111179 egr time delay module go bad and if running stated carb does it have any effect also i live in arizona desert area | | | Re: Dodge EGR timers info | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 pooh-bah | OP pooh-bah Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 | The EGR timers can literally last for decades. The most common cause of failure seems to be the potting compound liquifying and running out, allowing water and dirt in at the components.
If you have one which isn't working, be mindful that the timer case is the electrical chassis ground connection for the timer circuit, so the mounting bolts have to make good connection with the case and the firewall. The original bolts have several teeth under their head to dig through the paint to bite into the metal case. If the original bolts were lost, using starwashers on the new bolts would be a good choice. Cleaning the contact surfaces and applying some silicon dielectric grease to keep Oxygen and moisture away is a good idea. Sometimes the cable connector pins might corrode or have some of the potting compound seep out onto them, requiring cleanup of the terminals.
It shouldn't make any difference what carb is in use; the timer simply counts seconds from when the ignition switch is keyed on, then it turns on the egr solenoid for the charcoal canister. 30 second and 60 second delays are the most common I've encountered. The main impact of the EGR timer is how smooth the engine start/ initial warmup will be, since when the egr solenoid opens to the charcoal canisters, a bunch of fuel vapor will be sucked into the engine all at once, which can bog down a cold engine.
