As we are coming around the corner on getting the Econoline running/driving/stopping all swell, the bodywork gorilla has now taken over the wiring gorilla's place in the corner. Someone in my area is advertising paint/body work, charging $60/hr. His work on display looks good, but is that too cheap a rate (you get what you pay for)?

I can drive ~20 miles down the road and have my choice of shops, but a local independent guy will always win if he's legit. What does the hive mind think?

It does seem low brother. Check out his work and ask for referrals. I'm with you on the independent. I had a customer come into my work with a late 60's/70's truck he painted at his home. It was crazy good; I wonder if he'd do a side job. I'll call and let you know.

frscke1 has a guy he's used but expensive.

Back in the good old days, some of your best paint jobs were done in backyard garages. In the late 1970s-80s, I had an extra garage I rented out to three guys who worked for car dealership body shops during the day, just to have the health insurance, pension and other benefits from the job. But they did their best work in the evenings and weekends. I wish I would of taken a few pics of some of the custom vans that were done in my garage.

I've been in and out of the body and paint business for years and never once came across someone who would quote a customer an hourly rate. That would make me think twice for sure. One guy can do the same bodywork in an hour that might take the next guy 3 hours. I've always quoted total amount for the job, and all the body shops I've worked in have done the same thing. Not saying the guy is wrong or even bad, but I would definitely get references.

When I quote a customer for a paint job, I figure in all the hours I think it will take, plus supplies needed, and give them a total price to do the job. I get the old "JESUS! My cousin can do it for way less" all the damn time, and I look forward to laughing my ass off at a hack paintjob every stinking time they let their cousin do it. lol

And yeah, though I would love to have a nice big professional spray booth and all the goodies, I just can't swing that kind of money anytime soon, so I'm stuck painting helmets and bike tins in my dirty little one car garage. It is what it is. I've learned to work with what I have.

I agree with all of the above. Continued Success!

The Texas sun is taking a toll on the Fleet, none as bad as the 2 tone Chevy EXT. 1990 was a good year for the 454, but apparently not a good year for GM paint. frscke1's Vans are all one color. Mine is a light blue over dark blue, with a dark blue roof. It's pretty. Pretty peeling!

Whoever did all the repaints on frscke1's Van's, they did a pretty decent job. They both look great! Hot Rod Mag thought so too! IDK what paint costs, but when it gets done I'd think I'm not pulling out any glass, for sure. Going with a white roof too! LOL

The Red, White, and New Blue BBC G30 EXT 3 Van photoshoot has yet to happen. Not for lack of trying. 3rd times the Charm! grin
Big Red was a years long effort to get back to where frske1 wanted it to be, as well. Blood, Sweat, Tears, and $$$. And it looks so good! Go Big Red!

I'd like to get my van painted, but I'd probably die from sticker shock. lol. Luckily the paint is in pretty decent shape for being almost 30 years old. I'd like to delete some of the vinyl stripes and have the paint cut and buffed.

It cost $3500 to paint Big Red.

After 10 grand of body work to put it back to what it was.
