Hey all, quick question. I haven't had time to pull it apart yet and check out the backside, but does anyone know if the factory dash/console is vinyl wrapped plastic? Or just textured plastic? Previous owner drilled a bunch of holes in the side of the console to mount a cell phone holder, and they are marring an otherwise flawless dash/console apart from 30 years of grunge. Want to fill the holes and repaint the dash/console, but need to know what its made of before I start getting supplies together. Thanks ya'll 🤙
Um... Are the dashes on the '91s different than '92?
I was sure my '92 had vinyl on it, as I damaged some of it by improperly storing my doghouse cover/center section. So I went out to look at it, since it's partially taken apart, and all of the main dash is vinyl covered except the gauge surround and the piece under the steering wheel. The center console/doghouse cover is also vinyl wrapped except for the ashtray flap and the glove box door.
I'm including some pictures that I took to show how mine is. The first two are the area around where the radio mounts. You can see where the edge of the gray vinyl is. The third is the back side of my console/doghouse cover.
Pulled the gauge bezel and all the trim out this morning so I could start resurfacing the trim and I did in fact find out that its vinyl wrapped plastic. Gonna make the repairs so much more difficult. Eh its the way she goes. Probably gonna fill the holes with plastic putty, then surface it with some vinyl repair putty. Make me a stamp of the texture from somewhere down on the bottom of the console and try to get it as close as I can to blending in. Then hope it doesn't have a different finish after paint.
Interesting...I'll need to check on my '93. I just assumed it was just molded grey plastic.
It looks and feels like it until you get an edge on it. In fact, when I went out to look earlier, my first impression was that you were right. I only looked again (and harder) because I'd remembered that my damaged area was cut rather than cracked. The only place mine is soft enough to feel the difference is right under the radio/right over the ashtray lid (that's where mine got damaged).
71-95 are all plastic with a very thin layer of vinyl coated. The one in my 82 is peeling back, hence why I snatched up the nice 71-77 RV dash to convert mine. I priced getting my 82 recovered and it would have cost $950 + 200-300 paint match fee through justdashes.com
