I just picked up a 1985 GMC Vandura that was converted by a Canadian company called Get-Away.

I’m currently going through and fixing all the delayed maintenance items, one of which is a speedometer that isn’t working. I’ve replaced the housing and cable to no avail. It makes a clicking sound as if it’s skipping. The needle doesn’t move at all. I can pull the cable out of the back of the Speedo and watch it spin away while I drive. I can also reach behind the dash and spin the shaft on the back of the Speedo and the needle moves like it should. I’ve pulled the bullet out of the transmission and no gears are stripped but the driven gear does fit a little lose in the bullet. Any ideas for more troubleshooting?

The problem is:
It's too cold where you live. lol

I spent two and a half years in Anchorage back in the '90s, that was as far north as I was willing to go.
LOL

Everything with your speedometer seems like it's working individually, but it clicks at the speedometer when it's put together?
Is the cable engaging the speedometer shaft correctly?
That's the only thing I can think of, especially if the clicking is happening right there at the speedometer.
Maybe the speedometer's shaft is wallowed out?
I'm guessing the issue is up top there because if the cable is spinning, the speedometer should be reading something.

Well I can grab the cable and stop the spinning to reproduce the sound. Maybe the driven gear is rounded out where the cable enters? Hopefully it’s not the drive gear.

Yeah, I was going to ask you about that, then forgot (My son was asking me questions while I was typing).

I've re-o-ringed the housings and replaced the gears on a couple of my old Chevys, but the details of how the parts interact is not fresh in my mind.
The only things I can think of are:
The cable is spinning in the gear either because the gear is damaged or the cable isn't going in deep enough...
The gears are jumping teeth (not likely since you said the teeth look good)...
The drive gear clip failed/fell out and now the drive gear is slipping on the tail shaft.

Well replacing the housing and driven gear got the Speedo going! Now there’s a terrible intermittent squeak coming from either the Speedo or the cable.. hmmmm.

Probably cable, try spraying some penetrating lube into it. Cheap to replace if you need to.

Like Kursed mentioned, try lubricating the cable. I had a couple older Chevy's and was able the pull the guts out of the cable and give them a complete cleaning in penetrating fluid and then reinstall.

Liberally spread some grease on the cable and reinserted it in the housing. Squeak is gone! Thanks all!
