Haven't used my van for a couple of weeks, did some electrical work on the dash, nothing major. Got that all wrapped up. Went out to move it and press it in to service and it's making bad noises. It has been the case in the past that if it hasn't moved for a few weeks it makes a bit of engine slap that soon goes away. I've always put this down to oil draining into the pan and taking a few seconds to get where it needs to go. This time though, the noise hasn't gone away, it sounds like a bottom end noise and it doesn't sound good. Could be an exhaust leak but why would that happen out of thin air? It was fine when I last drove it. Looking at the oil pressure it was towards the high end of high. Went to get a tool, came back, checked again and it suddenly starts to drop to almost nothing (but the low pressure light didn't come on). Turned off engine. Started it again; slow rises, then drops. Turn off engine!

Yes it does have oil in. I moved it to a more level spot and checked the oil, it was towards the bottom of the mark but it didn't take much to get it to the top. I'm running it again and this time the oil pressure is staying steady

Any thoughts? Could this be an oil pump that has decided to stop working out of fricking no where? Bad oil filter, out of fricking no where? Any other suggestions?

This is really annoying, I was just getting on top of all the little problem with this thing and now this, out of nowhere mad

Get a new filter and open the old. To.check.the anti drainbacknvalve and bypass valve which are a. Combo valve on wix filters. Hope.the.pleats are sparkly free

Yep, I'll try that. Could be that it's stuck from sitting for it a bit. It is a Wix filter!

I put a chisel about 1/8" from.the seam.at the baseplate and give.a.light tap with a hammer and work around the perimeter. Rather than a saw grinder or.dedicated filter.cutter.

If.no oil drips.out of block when you unscrew the filter then the adbv is not sealing and will cause the valvetrain clatter for a few seconds on startup.

I guess the wix design could.cause a starvation issue but it.seems.unlikely.
i like.the mobil1.m1 301.filters on my 318

OK Sir, here are the results from your suggestion. One taken inside, i think those glitters re just reflections. One taken outside

I don't see any unpleasantness. New filter took a couple of days to arrive from amazon, I don't have time to go out right now. I went for an AC DELCO one based on nothing other than delivery speed. Oil did come out when i took the WIX filter off, quite a lot, enough to make me tighten it up and run for some shop towels and a bowl.

Based on those findings I felt more comfortable running it and went around with a screwdriver listening to various things. The source seemed to be around the driver side header. I took the PCV valve out, expecting volume of ticking/clatter to increase. It did not, so it wasn't from those valves. Then the noise seemed to go away. I checked the header bolts and two ( the outer ones) could be described as "not tight", so may be a leak from there. I've had that before and its the best kind of very nasty engine noise! Still note sure, there might be a feint ticking but with the dog house back on it's not noticeable.

So right now I'm feeling less stressed about this. Maybe it is the header heating up, expanding and sealing a crack/leak? Maybe the filter was faulty and now the good stuff has found it's way around to all the right places? Not sure But I'll drive it a bit and see how I go for now.

anyway, thanks for replying, it gave me a path forward and as always was much appreciated.

I usually take a 99 cent store chef's knife to the filter material along the end caps an cut around the perimeter to fully expand all the pleating and check for sparklies or uglies.

The screwdriver method of listening/ searching, is a fraction as good as an actual mechanics stethoscope.

I've found pennzoil platinum 10w-30 to be the quietest oil in my 318, but it is synthetic and while synthetics don't cause leaks, their cleaning abilities can remove sealing crud on the inside and reveal leaks.

your OP gauge reading high then low, when weird noises were happening, is a concern.

I put in a mechanical gauge in '07 as my oem gauge was scaring me with low readings.
The mechanical gauge revealed the oem gauge was insane and slow.
I T'd the line so the original gauge still works.

Probably going to cover the oem OP gauge with some digital ammeters soon

I don't have full confidence in the dash gauge. When I bought the van it did not work at all. I replaced the sender and now it seems OK but it does seem to vary high/low for no apparent reason. I've never seen it drop like it did the other day though. I am going to take this thing out to Lakeside tomorrow and keep a close eye on things on the way.
