Last year I installed a new Pioneer head unit into my '93 Chevy (Gladiator Conversion). It was working great and a few months later I installed new speakers in the rear (4 speakers) and left the OE ones up front (I'm not removing the dash!). Everything was okay until I was leaving for work one morning and then the stereo starting crackling almost like when you start to lose a station, and boom it quit working.

I double-checked my wiring and all was fine. Power, grounds, speaker wiring, etc. I thought maybe the head unit was bad so I bought another of the same unit, but nope it doesn't work either. All I get when I turn the stereo on is a small "pop" sound out of the speakers. Nothing from any radio stations or the CD player.

Not sure what happened...I'm stumped.

I may take the van to a local stereo shop or drive up to PA to Capt. Kurk's place so he can look at it.

Have you checked the fuse in the rear of the stereo? You could be getting a voltage spike through a bad ground from somewhere else allowing voltage to travel through the stereo ground or something.

I doubt it's just as simple as a bad stereo since you tried another and got the same results, but I wouldn't 100% rule that out. I've had horrible luck with Pioneer over the past 10-15 years. I've bought some from Walmart and they seem to be made with the cheapest components possible, but even the couple that didn't come from there failed eventually. I'm switching to Kenwood or Clarion or something next time around. Pioneer has always been my go to brand, but the last one I put in the wife's Cherokee only lasted about 6 months before having a whole boat load of problems, so I'm done with them.

I would definitely check the grounds everywhere, and also look for a power wire that might be arcing off the dash somewhere if you have your stereo ground connected to the dash. I've seen that a couple times where the metal bracing under the dash has worn through wires and they contact the metal of the dash itself throwing off anything that is grounded to it.

yes sir...fuse on back of stereo is good. Just find it odd that it was working fine until I installed new speakers. Cowinkydink? Possibly.

Not sure either then. Very weird. Hopefully you get it sorted fairly easy.

I have a Pioneer head unit too.

Several months ago it just quit.

I tried to reset it. Paperclip behind the faceplate. No dice.

The third or fourth try to reset it, The display started saying Amp Error.

Was pretty sure that message was directly related to my 6x9 20 year old door speaker that had issues with corrosion and age and a salty wetsuit being hung nearby.

I disconnected that speaker, and it fired right up.

More recently I replaced both 6x9's.

Is the impedance match the same with the new speakers, as it was with the original set-up?
