What in the world? | Joined: Oct 2020 Posts: 17 stranger | OP stranger Joined: Oct 2020 Posts: 17 | Went to fill the van up with gas the other day, only took 4 gallons. Odd, it's barely a 1/4 tank of gas....should've taken 15+ gallons. Drive it about 20 miles & try to fill it up again, same issue, can only put a gallon or so in it. If I force it, gas overflows the filler neck. What's going on here? I check the main vent tube coming from the tank to filler neck, it's fine.
It's a 77 B100 & few months back I did new 22 gal tank, sending unit, inline fuel filters, & new Carter carb, & mostly all new gas hoses. I didn't touch the charcoal canister under the passenger seat. I've heard those cause problems filling up sometimes if they get blocked. There's a drain elbow coming off it it looks clear. But I don't know anything about those canisters.
Thoughts?

Could have gone bad already of course. But I can't see a bad sending unit physically stop it from filling the tank up with gas.

I had a 76 C10 once that I couldn't insert the whole nozzle into. I could only put the first two inches of the nozzle into it before it started overflowing or shutting off the pump. Queue the dirty old man jokes I'm not a Dodge guy, so couldn't tell you about the charcoal canister, but we have some very knowledgeable Mopar folks here, so I'm sure someone will chime in soon. | | | Re: Can't put gas in the tank? I have had every part of the fuel delivery system out: the tank, the filler hose, the cross hoses, the down tube, the vent line...you name it. There is even a bracket that is designed to hold the tubes through the frame rail. No matter how I have tried I still can't get more than a trickle in the tank. I took the bracket out and tried a more direct, straight path into the tank. It helped a wee bit, but I still can't squeeze the trigger at the pump more than 10 seconds before it backs up and splashes back out. I can find NO reason. The spout is clear. The vent tube is clear. The path to the tank has NO restrictions. But it still takes me 15 minutes at the station to bleed gas into the tank. I have no idea how to rectify, but at some point i HAVE to fix that or I will go nuts with the time. Plus once it gets painted the splash back will jack things up. | | | Re: Can't put gas in the tank? The small hose actually passes through a small metal tube which goes through the 'frame', and that's a likely area for damage to occur.
Also on the other side of the tank there may be another small hose which hangs down and has its end open to the atmosphere as a vent. Mud wasps and spiders love to clog it up...
