Im looking to buy a 2000 Dodge 3.9L 1500, or a 5.2L 2500.

I like the shorter 1500, but is the V6, 3 speed, really as reliable as the 5.2L with the 4 speed automatic? Seems like the V6 would work a lot harder. Ive owned a early 318, but never a 3.9.

Any experiences or comments on the subject between the two?

The 3.9 is basically a 5.2 with two cylinders cut off (same bore & stroke).

From a personal stand-point I'd go with the 5.2. I had a '94 B250 (2500) with that engine and it was great, reliable engine and had plenty of power.

I met a guy with the 3.9 and 3 speed shorty

He claimed.he never got.better than 14mpg highway
I can average over 16 with my 5.2 overdrive if i keep it under 68mph...and i have the taller fiberglass roof and am fairly heavily loaded when driving cross country twice a year.

Mine is an TBI LA 318. Not mpfi Magnum.

The.overdrive transmission. .....ask whether it is the a500 or the a 518. 42 re or .46 re. The pan shape will differentiate. The 500 is square with a corner cut off. The 518 is square but one side has a bulge.

The 518 is heavier and more durable. The weakness is the od unit.

Average original transmission life is about 130k miles.
About 2700 $ to rebuild.
Use atf+4 only

That's kind if what I've noticed too, that the 3.9 is fine with around town driving, but really lacks efficient hey driving. Missing that overdrive really puts the extra wear on the v6, especially on the hwy.

I was getting 18 hwy, out of my '92 318. I have a hard time believing a 3 speed v6 can do better than that, lol. But I'm more concerned about wear, it can get better mpg, but I'd it crooks earlier, what's the point? You know?

Thank you for your input

Not sure if they put.in a 3.23:1 rear diff.ratio with a three speed and if the third gear is the same
. But in third at 60mph, my engine is obnoxiously loud with a 3:55 to one and turns about 2550 rpm where as with od at 68mph it is just under 2000 rpm.

My tx is rebuilt and third gear has not straight cut gears but straighter than original. Straight cut gears are louder.so my noise in 3rd at 60mph is partially the transmission

But i would not want a three speed unless i never intended to hit the highway.

just my 2 cents....i worked out of a 2000 ram van 1500 with the 3.9 v6 and 3 speed tranny for 12 years......304000 very very hard working man miles on it....i do remodel/home repair work and pulled a 16 ft tandem axle trailer with it alot.....lots of times with entire bunks of lumber on trailer with all my tools and 80 pound bags of sacrete stacked in the side doors 3 ft high......van was all factory with no overloads or air shocks and pulled such loads with ease....only real care i gave it was routine oil and filter change ....other than that i worked the hell out of it.....with just the van and approx 5-600 pounds of tool bins and tools it would average about 12 mpg....can honestly say its the toughest longest lasting van ive ever had with the exception of dads van with the slant 6

i lost it to a blown head gasket due to a ever so small leak at the heater core hose plastic fitting......by the time i caught it on the interstate runnin 80 with music playing too loud to hear anything it was too late....rest in peace RAGGEDY-ASS...ya done me good and made me alot of money for 12 years....hope this helps in your decision
