New to the forum - apologies if this is the wrong section to post. I just purchased a RED-E-KAMP '94 GMC Vandura 2500. Unfortunately the VIN is missing from the driver's door. Our DMV in Oregon requires the VIN to appear in at least 2 locations to title and register the vehicle. This one has not been wrecked and I can see where the sticker once was. I do have the VIN on the dashboard and it matches the history of the vehicle.

On other vehicles, I've been able to locate the VIN on a frame rail, fender under the hood, bumper cover, etc. I don't see another option on this GMC.

For any who have one of these vintage of GMC / Chevy or have worked on one, do you have any suggestions?

Interestingly, I ran into this same problem with a 2001 Class C on a Chevy chassis. In that case, I was able to convince the DMV employee to authorize it.

I've got a '94 G1500. I'll take a look.
I've never noticed another location, other than the two you mentioned, but I'll look anyway.

BTW..... How would the DMV know if one was missing? I've never had anyone with the DMV look at a vehicle.
Must be a west coast thang...... lol

Well, I did find the VIN in three locations.
1. Up on the dash, behind the windshield. (the star rivet location)
2. That sticker (decal) on the drivers door.
And 3. In the glovebox on the doghouse (which is just another sticker but it's there listed with the RPO codes)

Catfish - that's an awesome suggestion about the glove box. Unfortunately a prior owner must have broken the glove box door and did a junk yard find at some point as the VIN doesn't match the dash.

Oregon is picky about the VIN for whatever reason. The DMV actually charges $7 for the inspection. If they don't find a 2nd one in the standard location, you get some grief.

A saving grace I may have is that this van was registered in Oregon as recently as 2018 before it was sold to the buyer in Idaho who had it re-titled there. Now I'm bringing it back to Oregon. I'm going to suggest to DMV this week that they had previously titled it and the VIN, description and prior owner match. I also have paperwork from 2012 where the Oregon owner had tires replaced that includes the Oregon licence plate number, and a transmission rebuild that includes the last 6 digits of the VIN. Finally, the original conversion company from 1994 kept the "incomplete vehicle" booklet from GM. I have a copy of it and it includes the same exact VIN number as this particular vehicle.

I'm hoping that any of these are good enough. It all comes down to how picky the inspector chooses to be.

Still, I'd love to find out if there is a VIN on a frame rail or the like. The engine is original, but I expect it will have the engine casting #, not the VIN. I've not attempted to see if it is inscribed, or part of it, on the motor mounts.

Greetings Wanderso, the vin could also be in various locations. Try the following areas : 1. On top of the frame rail, passenger side, under the cab and also close to the motor mount. 2. It may also be on top of the frame rail under cab next to gearbox on drivers side. 3. On the frame just under the drivers door. 4. On the frame between the inner fender and the right front wheel. 5.On top of the frame just under the drivers seat. I hope you're able to find yours and that these suggestions help. 🚐

That era GMC G2500's are not body on frame. They're unibody. Still good areas to look.

Here in Jawga things are a little more laid back. Bubba "Junebug" Johnson (that's the county commissioners son-in-law) down to the tag office just looks up and says " Hell CatFish, did you buy another van?" "Here's yer tag." rofl

These are great added places to look. Thank you! I was successful today at the DMV - the clerk was fine with the dash VIN matching the Idaho title and prior Oregon one. They could also see where the sticker on the driver’s door was previously located. Regardless, I’m still going to check out some more of these suggested locations.

Thanks again.

Any luck on finding a stamped VIN on the chassis anywhere?
