Hey guys. I'm looking for the "right" van specific steering column for my 1974 G10 Shorty.

I have a 350 with a 3 on the tree and going automatic. My original plan was to install a 700R ( never done and I've been a Chevy guy all my life. Always did a 350 turbo with a shift kit; never a problem )

I spoke with a guy that had a shop that sold rebuild and he started saying the 700R trans are problem plagued???? I never heard that; but then I've been out of the performance game since 1982.

That's just a side note about what trans: 350 turbo vs 700R.

*****My immediate need*****

I need a high quality steering column for the auto trans: either a turbo 350 or 700R and I don't want chrome or a column keyed unit.

Does anyone have experience with an out fit called Speedway Motors or Ididit that sells steering columns ?? Thanks Mickey

I would go overdrive. If worried go with a shop that specializes in them, bowtie overdrives comes to mind.

In my experience, anybody that badmouths a 700R4 just doesn't understand the detent cable adjustment.
I've had several vehicles (and currently have 3) with 700R4s, and I've never had any issues.
They're solid, handle enough power, and last long enough.
(I've currently got two that are at the 180,000 mark.)

I don't have any experience with Speedway (they seem like just an online parts place to me), but I've heard a LOT about Ididit steering columns.
It seems like they are the go to place for car show builds and such.
I've never had any of their stuff, but I've seen it all over the place...
Car shows... magazines... etc.. etc...

Good luck.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

It sounds $$$$$. However they no doubt know there stuff. I've always had the 350 trans set up with shift kits; I want the right stuff and of course I fully expect to go over budget for the motor and trans.
I want a mild build on the motor so it has some " cahoanies " ; however want a dependable cross country driver as well. I know doubt down the road will add air.

I'm not really concerned with gas mileage and someone suggested sticking with a 350 trans and change the gears.

What would you guys do : 350 vs 700R ?

Hey Rusty; I'd assume you did a trans cooler and upgraded radiator in your vehicles that have the 700R transmissions. I'd plan on doing both even if I go with a 350 trans.

I was planning on doing an upgrade to the radiator and adding a trans cooler even if I go with a 350 trans. Your take Sir?

LOOKSLO; thank you for the lead. I'm pretty positive that auto in the 75' would work in my 74' . If it looked right: Would I do the "pay pal " thing ? I've never bought anything from someone on craigslist that was long distance or someone that was not recommended or vouched for on our forum.

No doubt I'd have to rebuild it and like Rusty mentioned the " Ididit " columns are getting positive feed backs. I'm going to text this guy tomorrow with the 75' , Thanks for looking out LOOKSLO
