There's a stirrup-like assembly in the linkage. Be certain that the press-fit Nylon pivots at either end of it are actually seated fully in their mounting holes. If they pop out, the linkage will still move, but become sloppy, leading to such problems as what you're experiencing. I'd always check that area prior to attempting to adjust the linkage at the transmission.
