So long story short i recently changed work vans and had to put my sub in the back, whereas it was between my seats in the cab in the old van.

Obviously there's a bass difference when its literally touching the seats compared to 12 feet behind me, with a cage behind the cab.

First thing. I have the subwoofer inverted. I do this because its a work van, and I dont need things falling off shelves, or hurting the speaker. Cant really damage that giant magnet.

It is against the back door, between door and a shelf.

Now the question in sub placement.
Does having it inverted change the direction it fires?( currently to the left with magnet to the right. Meaning its firing against the wall?

It is ported on the face. So speaker to the left, port to the right.

Im asking because I moved it and it got much louder. Used the be speaker down towards floor and port upwards.

How and where should a single sub be placed in a cargo work van for best results?

If it helps,

I'm definitely not an audio expert but I believe you always want your subs facing the back of the vehicle. So it will cause the sound waves bounce back to the front of the van. There are a lot of factors that will affect the sound. Such as windows in the van, insulation, wall coverings etc. You might just have to move it around until you get the sound you want. My buddy had a box with two tens. It was originally behind the front seats. Subs facing up. He decided to move it to under the bed where they faced out the back doors when opened. It made a huge difference in sound quality. I would say it made for a longer rumble. If that makes sense.

I really some one with some real knowledge chimes in on this. I would also like to know more.

When it played downward (magnet towards roof) it vibrated more. I have it now playing into the corner and port towards the other side and it sounds much louder to the ear. When faced it towards the rear doors it wasnt as loud.

But then again i didnt try both ways. Still unsure if an inverted sub fires the opposite direction. Maybe face the sub towards the Wall and the port towards the door? Id have to build a new box, but that's not an issue. Just working with what i already have.

Cant seem to find it now, but I once read a post that said mid van facing the side doors.

I've always found experimentation to give me the best results.
I've been tinkering with car audio for over 30 years and even though I've read tons of stuff on how to set up systems "properly", sound is subjective and everyone's tastes differ.

From your description, I'm getting that the sub is facing into the box with the magnet on the outside.
If that's the case, be sure you have it wired correctly (reverse polarity) or it will be out of phase with the rest of the speakers.

As far as where to put it and how to aim it...
I'd play a song that I'm really familiar with and just try a couple of different positions to see which one gives the best results.
I know that sounds obvious, but that's what I still do (at least when there's the option of choosing speaker position). LOL

Thanks everyone, I'll try to move it around and see what sounds best in this specific van. (Transit 250)

Ive tried reversing polarity and it's not much of a difference to my ear. Maybe since the sub is 12 feet behind my other speakers?

Yes the sub is inverted so its firing inside the box. With the port underneath the magnet.

And lukemaster, I'm in Tampa area sir

There should be a site that will give you the correct air space the sub needs to be enclosed in and insulated walls etc is a must so you don't get unwanted vibration .You would be surprised the bass you can get out of a High End 8" sub like JL Audio; Arc Audio etc... The key is to match it with a "quality" amp with good wire; power cable; rca's etc.

It's the Wild Wild West when it comes to wattage ratings in Car Audio; "no" set standard like Home Audio, You can have a 500 watt amp like JL Audio; or the Old School Rockford Fosgate out preform a Majestic 2000 watt amp.

You get what you pay for will Always be true and the Prep and Install is just as important.
Good Luck Sir
