California and have found a shop. Already in contact with. But I will try others just to get a good price and paint job done right. Thanks a lot. Not sure where you are in SoCal but if you're anywhere near Escondido/San Marcos, contact Jim at Streamline Auto Body. http://www.streamlineautobodyrepair.com/ | | | Re: Buying parts and picking the right bodyshop | Joined: Aug 2020 Posts: 17 stranger | OP stranger Joined: Aug 2020 Posts: 17 | Use to live in escondido but now in orange county. Over the years I had my best paint jobs done by guys who work at these kind of shops during the day just to have the health insurance, retirement and other benefits associated with a job, but do work on the side at a shop at their house for quick cash. In the 1970's I had an extra garage at the property I lived at and rented it out to 4 guys who worked for various body shops in the area during the day, but got together in the evenings and weekends to drink a few beers and make some extra cash doing body work. I wish I had taken pics of some of the vans and muscle cars they built and painted in my garage. | | | Re: Buying parts and picking the right bodyshop | Joined: Oct 2018 Posts: 75 Likes: 2 journeyman | journeyman Joined: Oct 2018 Posts: 75 Likes: 2 | If you have the inclination you should do the body and paint yourself. You'll learn a whole new set of skills and have the pride in knowing you did it yourself. It's hard work but certainly doable via YouTube university. | | | Re: Buying parts and picking the right bodyshop | Joined: Sep 2019 Posts: 1,510 Likes: 172 Master Yard Rat | Master Yard Rat Joined: Sep 2019 Posts: 1,510 Likes: 172 | Like most of the other replies, most auto repair shops nowadays only want to due insurance and collision work. I'm basically paying them for their time as they're sometimes dipping into their left overs at work if it is a general color. At least, that is how it has been in my experience.

There was also a few times over the years that they "borrowed" a few supplies from the storeroom. A couple of the guys worked at huge Chrysler and Chevrolet dealerships, so items were never missed from inventory. Years ago when the EPA put new regulations on these body shops, a lot of these small time guys quit doing the side jobs for fear of being levied large fines for not being compliant with the state laws. | | | Re: Buying parts and picking the right bodyshop | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 32,696 Likes: 172 Old Timer | Old Timer Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 32,696 Likes: 172 | I had a few guys quit doing the side jobs because of that s**t.
