My daughter's van has an oil leak at the forward end of the oil pan. I expect to have to replace the oil pan gasket, but I have all winter to do this and was wondering if I should replace the timing chain while I'm at it (along with checking the harmonic balancer). She loves her van, and plans to keep it on the road in the Summer months for many years, my job is to store it over the winter and deal with the list of issues.

So if I am replacing the timing chain, I was considering going with a double roller timing chain set and was wondering if there are any fitment concerns? RockAuto seems to suggest it is compatible.

Her van is a 1989 B250 with the 318 (5.2L).

Thanks in advance for any comments or advice.

Yes replace the timing chain it's worn out. The factory put in nylon geared chain sets to keep the noise down, they did but they would ware out fast (as little as 50,000 miles depending on use). And therefore affect timing, power, mileage etc.. A double roller chain will fit, they are the way to go and they are better design and cheap (around $30 from Summit last time I bought a stock style one). NEVER trust Rock Auto!!!!! They are basically a new age version of JC Whitney. Get your stuff from a real parts store. I'd be shocked if there was anything wrong with the balencer other that being dirty.

Excellent! I was planning on buying/ordering before I had everything apart. I'll go with the double roller and probably pass on the balancer. I expect a nylon gear in a 30+ year vehicle may have some issues. I just want her van to be reliable and not get that call when she is hundreds of miles away!

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Cheers,
