Body work is an art. I appreciate all the hard work that is involved and how hard it takes to make it perfect. Bondo is the devil's icing. It swells, cracks, and makes a complete mess. Only movies can get away with bondo. I've been to so many car shows where "custom" cars are cracking from chopped roofs and molded fenders and quarter panels. A lot of people seem to watch TV shows where they mold this or that with body filler (Bondo is just a brand of body filler). It's a hack job and will create problems in a few years. Like cracked paint, body panel separation, body filler bulging and creating lumps in doors as it expands such as shaving door handles. Frenched antennas are usually inset and when water gets into them the bondo also expands and cracks. You can always protect your bondo buggy by keeping it indoors at a reasonable temperature. But you still have a brittle clay hotwheels with an expensive paint job.

Yeah, I'm more into the 70's street vans with meaty tires and a rake.

As a 28 year old, I've learned to steer clear of pretty much any sites or blogs that mention the words "vanlife". I've found most of that content is tailored for idiots, or social media trends. And the focus is never on the vehicles themselves, always amenities inside of them. Most folks my age interested in vans could care less what kind of van they've got. I'd go even farther and say in my experience, they are typically very mechanically challenged.

More money than mechanical inclination.

You're not wrong. Bondo or really any filler, unless it's EXTREMELY minor surface coat, will crack eventually. Body shops (good ones anyway) use it fairly regularly but only very light skim coats and they know how to prep the metal properly as well, which minimizes the risk of falling out or cracking. If it's going to be too heavy, they replace the panel or section it.

use of body filler or a filler primer is commonplace with proper techniques it should be just fine, molding in rough metal work isn’t going to last as long.

Full metal body work is also done, much less common look up Wray Schelin/proshaper work, the master, a lot people out there that have learned from him. Even with metal work to go from 90% up to 100% perfect is a massive amount of work, and hence coin.

You may not necessarily be "wrong", but it seems your garage may need better ventilation.

However... Good quality body filler DOES NOT crack or shrink if it's applied correctly by a body tech that knows what they are doing. I think he's lumping the good guys that does body work and quality product together with the kind of idiot that gets all their advice, skills and supplies from O'Reilly Auto or Auto Zone.

This guy from Japan might think you’re wrong. That face is entirely out of body filler that he meticulously crafted. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what this guy has done.
