Greetings,

I bought a 94 Chevy G20 conversion "Cowboy Conversion", a few months back, and for the most part it's just sat in the garage awaiting time and money. Plus, with the AC being broken (needed new compressor), and the AZ desert being rather warm, I haven't really driven it much. However, on the 17th, I'm going to be taking this baby to south MS for work, coming from Tucson, AZ. I'll be there for 3 months, and this will be my primary vehicle for that period. I look forward to getting to know this van better, I can already see it turning into a money pit. I've been an auto enthusiast for years, but only sports cars, nothing like this. I find working on the van rewarding, as it's a vehicle meant to be enjoyed with others, and it has lots of practicality, but also can be quite fun.

All that being said, I've replaced the AC compressor, going to go get the system vacuumed and recharged tomorrow. I've changed the fuel filter, the oil & filter, and the air filter. The van leaks no oil, blows no smoke, nor does it have any odd noises to speak of, which is fairly impressive to me with the mileage of 245k that it has on the original 350 CID motor. I pulled off the dog house and looked to see a vacuum line from one of the valve covers was somehow undone that was connected to the throttle body, and I corrected that. Other than that, I can find nothing else wrong. I considered doing plugs/wires, but it runs so flawlessly it seems like a waste. The air suspension is still holding fine, though I'm bringing a small compressor with me just in case.

My question would be, what do you do when preparing your van for a long trip? Is there something I'm missing? I appreciate any insight, thank you for reading.

The longest trip I ever took in my van was about 160 miles round trip (to pick up a pinball machine).
The second longest trip was 75 miles (The day I brought her home).
Both times I just put gas in her and went.
lol

So... what I'm saying is... I can't help you.
lol

It sounds like your headed in the right direction, though.

I had bought my '92 in Cedar Rapids ... haulers said 1700 I said no.... flew there 350 and the van was at the airport all warmed up and I drove it home 2200 miles home to San Diego ... The 1st Chevy dealer I found I had the oil changed to Mobil 1 ... 3 days of white out blizzards in Feb. Had no time to prep for any thing .... just go you will find out what you need to do.

Our GMC has +336K miles (on a 305 no less). We drive it all the time, trips across country as well as to the grocery store. We've been on many adventures from Michigan to Florida, New York to Oregon and all places in between. Good maintenance is essential (as you know) for any equipment. Your eyes and ears are your best assets when preparing for a trip. The best gauge is to drive it everyday or as often as you can. Once you know the van well if there's a problem you'll see it, hear it or feel it.

Yep Terry we've crossed paths on the road... Can't wait for the truckins to get back to normal.
So what do you do when preparing your van for a long trip?

Check all the fuids, tires, belt. Lights. It's pretty much ready again not long after I get back because I always look again when I get home since it sits a lot I got time to do big stuff,or get it done. I usually need an oil change when I get back so that's usually ready for the next trip.
I've got camping gear under the bed for truck ins and camping. We stay in motels in the winter, but we always go someplace warm like Texas or Az orCa.
I never spend more than a couple days anywhere usually. I spent 5 days in Havasu in Feb. Long time one place.

I love to drive and hope I can do it for a lot longer
