I was almost emotional..Tranny swap starts at 8am tomorrow, with my buddies Brian and Cory. We have our fingers crossed that the tranny and drive shaft was the only damage. The drive shaft needs new U joints, especially the one off the front of the driveshaft, which was torn up pretty bad. Just gonna do both. When that tranny broke a pizza size piece off the bell housing, there must have been some serious stress and torque going on at that moment. With 6 bolts and the braces missing, it's no wonder. Engine spins over by hand OK. No damage to the block or crank that we can see. I have plenty of pics, just wish it was easier to post pics on this site. I have a few on my club site, Central Texas Vanners on FB. Plan to post more. Once the white van is up and running, I think I'll start a new "thread" on here.. Thanks for the memories and miles blue. Gonna miss you.
I still want another shorty....

It's an 89 B250 long wheel base. Road Runner customized according to the sticker. Blue is now a parts van. But I take the experiences with me to the next van. So, with a new project van, it's time to start a new thread...Mlarky's 89 Dodge B250. I hope y'all will follow along....

Then I hit the wrong button and erased ALL of it... ... OK, in a nut shell.. The tranny from blue is in the white. Blue is now a parts van. The 318 engine runs, just lifters clattering, likely drain down of oil from sitting. The drive shaft was toast so I had to spend the bucks to have a new one built. No used ones available anywhere. If all goes according to plan...drive shaft in, test in drive in neighborhood, pressure wash the engine bay and underside, cleaning the rusty radiator overflow, do a total Coolant flush, Charge the AC, then barring unforeseens...I drive it to work Monday. Wish me luck. You can also follow the story on FB, groups, Central Texas Vanners. more soon. | | | .Mlarky's 89 Dodge B250 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,308 Likes: 569 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,308 Likes: 569 | I think since parts from 1 made another we just rename this thread N carry on ...
Then all the history is in one place..

My buddies Brian and Cory came over to help. But after 9 hours of non stop this and that, it turned into a lot more work and repairs than I thought it would be. So far it's been easy fixes. The last of the tranny pieces put on, 2 brackets, the inspection plate, Drive shaft in, . Then when I was checking the oil, before start up, the dip stick tube snapped. Luckily had one on Blue. The more we checked things out, the more we found wrong. So many unfinished items on the motor... The exhaust manifold bolts weren't even snugged down, so we fixed the exhaust leaks. ..tightened bolts all over the engine, brackets, had to replace the power steering belt that was coming apart in chunks, fixed leaky fuel rails, dealt with a couple of wiring issues. We did try to get the ac cooling but turns out it needs new expansion valve, drier, and then figure out why the rear ac has no power to the blower motor. The engine still has a few issues. Starts right up and runs decent, but Sounds and acts like the valves need adjusting. We wonder if they ever were? One cylinder misfiring, the valve clatter matches the misfire. Why I am convinced the vales need setting. Discovered the brushed on paint is latex. So, easy to strip, sand and primer when the weather cools down a bit. THINGS STILL TO FIX...passenger side power window motor ( goes down, but not up, sounds like stripped gear on the motor), Temp gauge not moving, thinking a temperature sensor, the previously mentioned AC components, then charge it up. Find the power issue to rear air, adjust the valves and check the timing, now the brake lights aren't working, ( either fuse or brake light switch), figure out the wiring differences on the over drive with a wiring diagram and some research, (89 has 3 wires while 91 trans uses 2) still needs the radiator and coolant flushed, ...that's on the plan for next Sunday. See if I can do one or two after work before the weekend...Still have to get the title transferred and insure it before I drive it. We did take a drive through the neighborhood. She runs decent, stops and handles good. Just gotta fix a lot of little things. More soon. | | | Re: .Mlarky's 89 Dodge B250 | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 345 Likes: 9 enthusiast | OP enthusiast Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 345 Likes: 9 | Tranny in, drove through the neighborhood. Then it started running funky. Couldn't get the timing right. Brian and I spent at least 45 minutes trying to get the timing set. Then we figured the timing chain might be stretched or had jumped a tooth. Then with an unmistakable noise, it suddenly stuttered, back fired and died. We both knew what had just happened...I turned the crank with a wrench..rattle rattle rattle rattle.....The 318 had thrown or snapped the timing chain. We pulled the radiator and header panel off. One step closer to pulling the 318. This coming Sunday going to start the swap of the 360 from Blue to the white van. | | | Re: .Mlarky's 89 Dodge B250 | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 345 Likes: 9 enthusiast | OP enthusiast Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 345 Likes: 9 | This 89 van is becoming a lot more work than I thought it would. The 318 might be salvageable, but at considerable expense to fix all it's issues. At least $400 in parts to do it right. So I went ahead with the drive train swap from Blue. Got the 360 swapped in, also put in a new torque converter, water pump and timing chain ( double roller) on the 360. Most all other parts on the 360 were new within the last 2 years. Starter, AC compressor, alternator, etc. Discovered it's a roller motor! After I had been told it wasn't the Magnum roller motor until 93. ( Blue is a 92) So I guess that was a bonus. Now to put on the alternator, and other accessories. THEN...I get to swap the entire wiring harness under the hood, the computer, and probably in the dash. I'll have to swap the gauge cluster since the speedometer is cable driven in 89, and electronic in the 92. Will also have to swap the steering column to match the wiring harness swap, but that's cool since the turn signal switch is broken on the 89, and since it has tilt, costs $200!. Cheaper and easier to swap columns. Been thinking about the name for the van...since that dear came out of the Blue, the 89 is getting so much out of Blue, and I am now going to finish it out like I was going to do on my shorty Blue...Think I'll name her "Out Of The Blue". More soon. | | |
