Hi

Van started fine Friday night, was doing some welding to the body panels Saturday & Sunday with the battery disconnected, now she won't start. she cranks over but does not fire. I've never had any bother with her so not needed to do any mechanical work on her so looking for some troubleshooting steps to diagnose the problem. Will be checking all fuses tonight but where should I start after that?

thansk

Check the fuses, like you said, then check for spark and check for fuel.

If you're not getting spark at the plugs, check to make sure the coil's getting 12v to it when it's cranking.

If you're not getting fuel pressure, make sure the fuel pump fuse and relay are good before you blame the pump.

One thing to consider... Since you disconnected the battery, go back and make sure you didn't forget to put a wire back on (sometimes there are smaller wires on separate lugs that can get missed when going back together).

OK spent some time last week diagosing the issue, during which i found the problem to be intermittent but mostly failing to start. Here is what Ive found.

Fuses are ok
Fuel pump primes and runs when ignition switched on
No spark at the plugs
No spark at the coil which is getting 12v

inspecting the ignition leads there was some corrosion inside and a split in the boot from the coil
inspecting the distributor cap inside the terminals showed signs of wear as did the rotor
when cranking the distributor is turning and when she starts the distributor is doing its job BUT as a matter of course I'm going to replace with new cap, rotor, ignition leads and sparkplugs

so occasionally I am getting spark at the ignition coil tower to a grounded test light but most often not. Looking at my service books the resistance test on the ignition coil fails as dose the resistance test on the pickup coil (pic 1 & 2) and following the diagnostics charts A3 & 6A I get as far as replace the DI control module. As I have to get everything shipped to UK im prob going to order a Ignition coil, pickup coil and DI control module and as replacing the pickup could involves removing the distributor am I as well to just get a new full distributor as the price is approximately the same?

oops that last picture of the volt meter is the wrong one, I was meant to be the pic of 12v at the coil

dont use alum caps ... get a brass top cap ...they last longer and are more reliable. you dont need a new dist just a cap rotor and coil .

On the money frscke, I just ordered a coil, module and ignition coil, leads and plugs while I was doing it. She's alive again.
