My buddy Brain and his son in law came over Sunday morning. I already had the van up on ramps and jack stands. We could now get a better look. What we soon discovered took us completely by surprise! The broken tranny was even WORSE than we first thought!! We were in shock, the the "holy..what-evers" started flowing. Whoever put the tranny to the motor completely TOTALLY screwed up! .... ONLY 4 bolts held it the tranny in place..2 at the top of the trans to the motor, where the bell housing part of the case SNAPPED OFF! (The ones you tighten from inside at the back of motor through the dog house hole). Then the 2 at the tranny mount in the back. That's ALL! ONLY 4 bolts that were holding the whole drive train together!!! Only ONE of the two required support braces from the motor to tranny, was there, and it wasn't even bolted to the block, just to the tranny and barely snug! We wondered how long or how many miles before the tranny and the motor separated in a lazy "V" ?? There was 1 1/2" gap between them where they meet at the bottom. 1 of the 2 bolts for the starer was holding it in, and that bolt wasn't even seated. Basically there were 7 bolts missing. The flex plate got it's 4 ears torn off. One of the bolts to the torque converter was crossed threaded in all the way. Hoping I can chase the threads and save $100 on a new one. Even the inspection cover was torn up, and it was only held on with 1 bolt. It was as much a night mare as it was unbelievable.

Last time I saw this kind of transmission damage was at the drag strip! This was just shear ignorance, carelessness or intentional, or the beer flowed before the job was done...Would love to know who and bitch them out for sheer stupidity. Never seen anything like it! Neither had Brian or Cory. Posted pics on Central Texas Vanners FB site. (easier to do on there than this site. Why?).

The claim by previous owner was that the 318 motor was rebuilt, was quickly proven wrong right away. Block and pan were dirty. New or rebuilt heads for sure, but obvious it was a top end over haul only. We hope the engine wasn't damaged when the drive train tried to separate. Don't see any visible damage. If it fires up OK, then leave it. If the motor isn't right, then I swap the 360 in. The 318 spins by hand just fine, so I have hope. If not, then I already have everything there for a swap, down to the wiring harness. Just park the vans side by side and go for it.

If all goes according to our plan, my blue shorty will be donating it's tranny this coming Sunday.. Then blue starts gets parked on the side of the garage, and I begin to part it out. Plenty of parts on blue shorty to fix up the white long B250. For now my intention is to get the white van up and running, work out any bugs, get it reliable and true. Then finish the white van out as I was intending on my shorty. Have everything I need and plenty of eager help to get 'er done this time! Then Cory wants me to help find his own van. Working on Brain to get his own. Start our own club. Hope Brian gets the van bug while he's helping build mine, then Cory's. Wonder if should start a new thread/posting on the white van? Opinions on that? Or cam someone tell me how to change the title of this one?

Sounds like a great score - especially if it is just a tranny swap from the other van

Drove my blue Shorty Dodge for the last time today. I was almost emotional..Tranny swap starts at 8am tomorrow, with my buddies Brian and Cory. We have our fingers crossed that the tranny and drive shaft was the only damage. The drive shaft needs new U joints, especially the one off the front of the driveshaft, which was torn up pretty bad. Just gonna do both. When that tranny broke a pizza size piece off the bell housing, there must have been some serious stress and torque going on at that moment. With 6 bolts and the braces missing, it's no wonder. Engine spins over by hand OK. No damage to the block or crank that we can see. I have plenty of pics, just wish it was easier to post pics on this site. I have a few on my club site, Central Texas Vanners on FB. Plan to post more. Once the white van is up and running, I think I'll start a new "thread" on here.. Thanks for the memories and miles blue. Gonna miss you.

I still want another shorty....

Since my 92 shorty, "Blue" got totaled, I now have a replacement van. It's an 89 B250 long wheel base. Road Runner customized according to the sticker. Blue is now a parts van. But I take the experiences with me to the next van. So, with a new project van, it's time to start a new thread...Mlarky's 89 Dodge B250. I hope y'all will follow along....

Had this nice well written new thread all written out, details about the new project. Then I hit the wrong button and erased ALL of it... frown... OK, in a nut shell.. The tranny from blue is in the white. Blue is now a parts van. The 318 engine runs, just lifters clattering, likely drain down of oil from sitting. The drive shaft was toast so I had to spend the bucks to have a new one built. No used ones available anywhere. If all goes according to plan...drive shaft in, test in drive in neighborhood, pressure wash the engine bay and underside, cleaning the rusty radiator overflow, do a total Coolant flush, Charge the AC, then barring unforeseens...I drive it to work Monday. Wish me luck. You can also follow the story on FB, groups, Central Texas Vanners. more soon.

Spent all of Sunday on the 89 Dodge. My buddies Brian and Cory came over to help. But after 9 hours of non stop this and that, it turned into a lot more work and repairs than I thought it would be. So far it's been easy fixes. The last of the tranny pieces put on, 2 brackets, the inspection plate, Drive shaft in, . Then when I was checking the oil, before start up, the dip stick tube snapped. Luckily had one on Blue. The more we checked things out, the more we found wrong. So many unfinished items on the motor... The exhaust manifold bolts weren't even snugged down, so we fixed the exhaust leaks. ..tightened bolts all over the engine, brackets, had to replace the power steering belt that was coming apart in chunks, fixed leaky fuel rails, dealt with a couple of wiring issues. We did try to get the ac cooling but turns out it needs new expansion valve, drier, and then figure out why the rear ac has no power to the blower motor. The engine still has a few issues. Starts right up and runs decent, but Sounds and acts like the valves need adjusting. We wonder if they ever were? One cylinder misfiring, the valve clatter matches the misfire. Why I am convinced the vales need setting. Discovered the brushed on paint is latex. So, easy to strip, sand and primer when the weather cools down a bit. THINGS STILL TO FIX...passenger side power window motor ( goes down, but not up, sounds like stripped gear on the motor), Temp gauge not moving, thinking a temperature sensor, the previously mentioned AC components, then charge it up. Find the power issue to rear air, adjust the valves and check the timing, now the brake lights aren't working, ( either fuse or brake light switch), figure out the wiring differences on the over drive with a wiring diagram and some research, (89 has 3 wires while 91 trans uses 2) still needs the radiator and coolant flushed, ...that's on the plan for next Sunday. See if I can do one or two after work before the weekend...Still have to get the title transferred and insure it before I drive it. We did take a drive through the neighborhood. She runs decent, stops and handles good. Just gotta fix a lot of little things. More soon.

Tranny in, drove through the neighborhood. Then it started running funky. Couldn't get the timing right. Brian and I spent at least 45 minutes trying to get the timing set. Then we figured the timing chain might be stretched or had jumped a tooth. Then with an unmistakable noise, it suddenly stuttered, back fired and died. We both knew what had just happened...I turned the crank with a wrench..rattle rattle rattle rattle.....The 318 had thrown or snapped the timing chain. We pulled the radiator and header panel off. One step closer to pulling the 318.
This coming Sunday going to start the swap of the 360 from Blue to the white van.
